Context

Passing Obamacare was a huge step forward in expanding access to affordable, quality health care—especially for LGBTQ+ Americans. But, every day over the past ten years, the Affordable Care Act has been under relentless attack. Biden opposes every effort to get rid of this historic law—including efforts by Republicans, and efforts by Democrats. Instead of starting from scratch and getting rid of private insurance, he has a plan to build on the Affordable Care Act by giving Americans more choice, reducing health care costs, and making our health care system less complex to navigate. Biden’s plan will ensure every single American has access to affordable, quality health insurance and specifically help LGBTQ+ Americans.

The Argument

Biden will: Guarantee the Affordable Care Act’s nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community. Ensure coverage for comprehensive care for LGBTQ+ Americans. Update and implement the Obama-Biden Administration’s comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy. Decriminalize HIV exposure and transmission laws. Ban so-called “conversion therapy.” Restore federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Expand mental health and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ individuals. [1] Improve access to quality health care for LGBTQ+ Americans in rural communities.

Counter arguments

"Biden’s actual record, spanning over 40 years in Washington, instead shows a politician who spent his entire career attacking gay people and the LGBT community. From his persistent opposition to gay marriage, to continued support for regimes that murder homosexuals, and even suggesting gay people might be “security risks” as federal employees, Biden’s open support for LGBT rights arrived very late, even among Democrats, and well after great advances toward LGBT equality had already been made."
