What are the advantages and disadvantages of year round school?
Back to question

Curriculum is more structured and consistent

In a year round school structure, teachers must prepare more material for students to absorb and study. This makes the curriculum able to cover more topics or cover certain topics more in depth than in a 9 month school system.

The Argument

In a year round schedule, teachers can formulate more robust and diverse curriculums for students.[1] Teachers can include more research, more perspectives, and offer students more depth on certain subjects. [1] For example, instead of only discussing the causes and consequences of the American Civil War, a teacher can provide information on the key players, battles, and lesser-known information. This information could prove invaluable for students' futures in understanding how their country operates and its past. Without the elongated 10 to 12 week summer break for students, their instruction would continue. [2] Year round schooling can provide stability and continuity that young minds need to grow and develop properly. Year round schooling is best for continuity in education and allows teachers to provide more breadth and depth in their curriculums.

Counter arguments

There does not need to be year round schooling for students to learn all that they need for success. The traditional schooling system has standards that ensure students know the information that has been deemed most important.[3] To prove student comprehension and retention, standardized testing is also implemented in multiple regions.
