What is the best system of government?
Back to question

Government Representatives

Government representatives give a voice to the different political views among civilians.

The Argument

Political representatives are the highlight of a republic government. Instead of having to come together to vote, people can elect officials to vote on their behalf.[1] By having representatives, people leave the responsibility of direct voting up to people who specialize in politics.

Counter arguments

Having government representatives vote for the civilian population robs a person the right to understand how government works. In a poll taken in America, less than 20% of the people who were asked about their state politics knew who the state’s legislator was.[2] If there weren’t any representatives, people would be more motivated to be involved in their country’s government.

Proponents

Premises

[P1] Republic governments have government representatives. [P2] Civilians can elect people to vote for them instead of voting directly. [P3] Voting in the government should be left to people who know how the government works.

Rejecting the premises

[Rejecting P3] Voting should be put directly in civilian hands. Without being involved, people won’t be able to educate themselves on how the government works.
