What is Libertarianism?
Back to question

Libertarianism means liberty

Libertarianism supports the theory that society can be transformed by limiting government intervention. With human freedom at the heart of the movement, Libertarians would like to move towards a self-governed society free of coercion.

The Argument

The belief that everyone should have the freedom to make their own decisions is at the heart of Libertarianism. Libertarianism is a pro-choice political philosophy that champions liberty over everything else in political or civic culture.[1] Libertarians feel the government should intervene as little as possible and believe in a free society. They tend to be very liberal when it comes to social issues and have conservative values about fiscal issues.[2] The goal of Libertarianism is to increase human freedom and minimize coercion in personal or economic matters. This means Libertarians strongly support "self-government," seeing power stripped from the government so that people have the liberty to govern themselves. According to Libertarianism, if the government must exist, it should only exist to protect individuals from harm.[3]
