What are the pros and cons of vaping?
Back to question

Vaping is a better alternative to smoking cigarettes

E-cigarettes don't contain tar and eliminate combustion and ash, making them softer on the lungs, unlike traditional cigarettes. They are 95% less harmful than tobacco and are a healthier alternative to smoking.

The Argument

Traditional cigarettes are different than e-cigarettes because they contain tobacco, which is the leading cause of cancer in people who smoke. People who smoke regular cigarettes are often addicted to smoking and cannot quit. E-cigarettes are an alternative smokers shift to overcome their addiction. E-cigarettes offer a nicotine hit without the harmful effects of tobacco and tar. The UK's Cancer Research scientists support this shift from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. (However, they encourage a regulated distribution of vaping items and make sure that they are not presented as a "cool" product to children. [1]) E-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes as they are not associated with serious health risks that are often associated with cigarettes. Vaping allows smokers to control their nicotine intake so they can gradually decrease their intake and eventually end their addiction. According to research by the Royal College of Physicians, vaping is 95% safer than smoking, and it allows smokers to have better oral hygiene, lung capacity, and skin health. [2]

Counter arguments

In 2018, a year-long study was published where smokers used vaping products to quit cigarettes but could not do so, which is why the FDA has disapproved of e-cigarettes for use in quitting smoking. [3] Vaping products haven't been efficient in helping smokers quit but rather have increased the number of nicotine in-takers. People who never smoked before are now using e-cigarettes due to the way they are marketed positively. E-cigarettes have addictive properties because of nicotine, making it hard for people who've only smoked e-cigarettes to quit. Vaping also results in dual-use, which is when one vapes and smokes interchangeably. [4]
