Is our society becoming egalitarian?

Egalitarianism is a school of thought within political philosophy that builds from the concept of social equality, prioritizing it for all people. It is generally the idea that all humans are equal in fundamental worth or moral status. Society is changing... and we ask the question: are we becoming more egalitarian?

Yes, our society is becoming more egalitarian

From #BLM to calls for UBI and climate justice, the younger generations are seeing and working to repair the inequities of the past, and in doing so making society more egalitarian.

No, our society is not becoming egalitarian

Wealth inequity continues to grow, authoritarian rulers enforce social divides, war continues, and poverty abounds. There is progress in many parts of the world, but society is not becoming more egalitarian.

Prejudice and conflicting political views are causing tension in our society

Political tensions are on the rise, causing society to become more divided than ever. Social inequalities will continue to cause division all around the world. Though many fight for social equality and the hope for an egalitarian society, racism, homophobia, and sexism still remain deeply rooted in society.

Climate change and global poverty are further dividing societies

Extreme global poverty continues to increase due to the lack of resources in various parts of the world. The lack of resources, such as food and clean drinking water, is primarily linked to climate change. Without the proper resources, the chance of an egalitarian society is less likely.

Wealth inequality contributes to a lack of opportunities

There is a huge economic divide, with the richest owning 44 percent of the world’s wealth. An egalitarian society is unattainable as the massive economic gap continues.
