**Tl;dr: Sleeping naked is the best way to sleep due to the countless physical and mental health benefits.** Sleeping naked has endless benefits and was what nature intended. Sleeping naked has proved to improve male fertility as a recent study of 656 males proved a link between wearing tight fitted underwear and a lower sperm count. [1] Sleeping naked keeps the testicles at an optimal temperature for sperm health. Sleeping naked also benefits women's genital health as much as males. Wearing tight underwear to bed creates a prime environment for the overproduction of yeast, leading to infections like thrush.[2] Sleeping naked is one of the best ways to prevent this. Sleeping naked not only provides physical health benefits but mental ones too. A study by West showed that the more time spent naked provides more life satisfaction.[3] The mental health benefits of sleeping naked can be further bolstered if next to a partner. A study by Mogburg et al showed oxytocin release does not have to come from sexual interactions alone, and sleeping naked with a partner can be a great release of this happy hormone. [4] The benefits of sleeping go beyond this list (and can be found here: https://www.healthline.com/health/benefits-of-sleeping-naked#self-esteem) but the prior examples give an idea of the many fantastic reasons to sleep naked. **TL;DR- There are many benefits of sleeping naked. However, in certain climates it is rather the opposite of beneficial, as it's hard to keep the right temperature.** It may seem sensible to sleep naked in the summer to avoid getting too hot. Yet, while this seems like the best option, studies have shown that when temperatures are high, the best thing to wear to bed is light cotton pyjamas, as the last thing you want is your actual duvet getting all sweaty. With pyjamas, you can just wash them after 2-3 nights, whereas duvets are much more of a pain to wash, and if they're getting your body's natural oils on them all the time, you'd have to wash them more frequently. On the other hand, sleeping naked in the winter may be harder. Even if your house is warm, it gets awfully cold most winter mornings, and it would be even harder to get out of the warm duvets in the morning, and into the freezing bedroom until you jump in the shower or put clothes on. Also, there is nothing better than being all nice and cosy in your pyjamas and duvets during the colder months, and being cosy in fluffy garments makes it much easier to fall asleep as well. With sleeping naked, on the other hand, you're more likely to wake up at 3 in the morning shivering, especially as your body temperature changes during the sleep cycle [1]. Sleeping naked has its successes and failures, depending on the individual. I have done it, and it has made me feel about the same as if I had slept fully clothed. I did not mind it at all, but I never worked up the habit. But sleeping naked has its health benefits. Travis Bradberry wrote on Forbes that sleeping naked helps people fall asleep faster, and reduces stress. Since the body, he argues, is not covered in clothing, it has fewer layers to generate warmth, which speeds up the body's metabolism. So, in theory, sleeping naked has its health benefits. But it also has its detractions. Sleeping naked may boost confidence, but only for those content with the process. For people not content with sleeping naked, it may actually reduce confidence since they are not sleeping within their literal comfort zone. If people feel awkward sleeping naked, then doing it won't help fall asleep faster or manage stress. Also, the body may actually need the extra layer of clothing if it is chilly if it is to maintain warmth throughout the body. There are no definite rules for how one should sleep. The rules are to each their own. Individuals should only consider sleeping naked if they are content with the idea. If they are not, then sleeping awkward will not bring many of the health benefits health professionals propose they do. **TL; DR Sleeping naked has abundant benefits but the risk of one specific; highly unlikely scenario is horrifying enough that it entirely outweighs the benefits.** Sleeping nude is not for everyone- there are documented benefits. Finding it easier to sleep and easier to wake up; regulating cortisol and skin to skin contact are all cited as advantages offered by sleeping naked. (1) Sources such as the one cited here also suggest that it aids sleeping in hot weather; however there is conflicting information on the topic. Dt Sophie Bostock of The Sleep Scientist gives her perspective in an article for Women’s Health: …” what you can actually find is if sweat collects on the body, and isn't whipped away by a moisture-wicking surface - like you get from clothing - then it doesn't help you cool.”(2) Julius Patrick; Lead Sleep Physiologist for Bupa Cromwell agrees: "When you sleep naked, sweat actually collects on the body and then remains there. However hot it is when you drift off, remember your body temperature will drop during the night."(3) It isn’t a cure- all, however. One purely hypothetical circumstance- admittedly an outlier- could occur when two people share a bed. If you cast your mind back to the article referenced earlier; you’ll remember that wearing light nightwear is advised in warmer weather because it absorbs sweat. Imagine now that your partner has a terrible fever. They’re shivering; their head hurts, they’re sore- the works. More than anything else though, they are sweating. They are really, really sweating. There’s no pyjamas to absorb it- so the bedlinen absorbs it…badly. Here’s where skin on skin contact really stops being an advantage. Sounds gross? It is! As mentioned, this is a total outlier and not at all likely. There is significant evidence that sleeping naked is good for us and very little risk that this specific situation will occur. Is it really worth the risk, though?
