**British Parliamentary is a style of debate which reflects that of debate in British Parliament.** • Just like in the House of Commons, this style of debate is divided into two opposing sides; the _‘proposition’_ and the _‘opposition’_. Each side of the debate is further split into an ‘opening team’ and ‘closing team’ - all four teams have two speakers. • In this debate format, each speaker gives a speech of up to five minutes, sometimes seven if requested. The speeches given alternate between proposition and opposition and begin with the first proposition team. The second teams (final four speakers) have to offer new ideas into the debate and cannot repeat what the team before has already said. The last speaker on each side is the ‘summary speaker’ and cannot introduce completely new arguments. They should summarise the debate so far. • Each team prepares separately and is judged separately using a ranking system of 1-4.
