TL;DR - It is perfectly okay to have a different opinion as that of the next person. But what is not okay is how intolerant some people are about it. Disagreeing with someone does not mean that’s it’s okay for you to disrespect them.
When looking at a typical example where someone has a difference of opinion in the workplace with a collogue, the following two scenarios are presented: the first scenario looks at a person having a difference of opinion with a work colleague, where the situation leads to animosity and is not resolved. While the second scenario looks at someone who has had a difference of opinion with a work colleague where the situation leads to no animosity. So clearly, the first scenario resulted in a negative consequence and the second scenario resulted in a positive consequence as a result of a difference in opinion.
However, it goes deeper than this because differences in opinion depend on a number of factors such as the context of the situation. That is to say, the topic that is being discussed or debated. Also, on the person or persons involved and what they are like, what their attitude is towards a particular situation or event. Therefore, it is important to remember that you will never please everyone with your opinions so don’t try. Just try to respect and value the right to differ and the differences in opinion as this can actually be beneficial to you, especially where growing as an individual is concerned.
So while opinions incite strong reactions, whether you agree with the next person or not, do note that it also allows people to engage with one another ensuring that communication is happening.
For the majority, I completely agree with this opinion. Every person is different and that is what makes us interesting as human beings, We all have differing opinions, to learn to debate with one another without it turning personal and fierce is so important. However, there are certain opinions that will naturally (and rightly so) cause division. If someone's opinion contains offensive thought, such as it being racist / misogynistic / homophobic, then I think it is natural and correct that someone would lose respect for one promoting these opinions. Sometimes, a persons opinion is a reflection of their life morals, which in turn may cause major divisions between different groups of people,
Hi Catrin and thank you for your comment and opinion. It's really great to see so many people voicing their thoughts.
You're spot on in that every person is different and that is what makes us interesting as human beings. This then also accounts for some very interesting results, especially when we do not agree on something like a difference in opinion.
Also, I think that you have made a really great point and I like the way you put it that we all have difference opinions (as no two, three or four, etc. people can agree all of the time) and that we all need to learn to debate with one another without it turning personal and fierce. Although, I feel that this should or could include what you mentioned and I quote, "However, there are certain opinions that will naturally (and rightly so) cause division." Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's not natural for someone to get upset and maybe even lose respect for the way that the next person has perhaps brought their opinion across (especially if it was done in a disrespectful way to them). What I mean to say is, get upset by all means. But try and do it in a responsible manner that does not have a potentially negative impact on the next person and those around you. Does this make sense?
Thank you and I'm looking forward to sharing more of your opinions on various other opinions and topics!
What does a 'for' opinion mean? and what does the question mean by matter?
All I can think in response to this is that it depends. A difference in opinion can range anywhere from liking the color orange to advocating for genocide. If we define 'matter' as the ability for an individual to not die then opinion doesn't matter in the former, but does in the latter. If we define 'matter' as promoting cohesion in the workplace, then opinion matters in both scenarios.
The idea this question is trying to address is that opinions are inconsequential until they're not, but this question is too vague to guide a specific conversation. I don't mean to offend, I'm just lost on what we're agreeing/disagreeing about.
Hi Melanie and thank you for you comment and sharing your opinion. I do understand and agree with what you have mentioned here, especially in terms of the fact that the question is too vague. However, I was under the impression that we should be mindful of not creating any writing that is too verbose. Therefore, I kept it kind of brief and couldn't get into as much as I wanted in terms of my opinion and the rest of the argument. What I had to say on the rest of this question, would have really been too much. However, I feel that where this question is concerned I managed to get across the important points that I wanted to mention.
With regards to what we're agreeing/disagreeing on, it's just on whether having a different opinion as the next person really does matter (in the general sense). And as I mentioned in my original opinion, the short version is that is basically depends on context, personal preference and attitude, etc.
What's more, I do have to say that I understand where you are coming from in that this question is and I quote, " too vague to guide a specific conversation." Yes, I understand and even to a certain extent agree. Concerning your question on what does a 'for' opinion mean. It means that I am for the question that a difference in opinion really does matter. Also, on your next question, "What does the question mean by matter?" I hope that you will bear in mind what I have mentioned earlier about why I kept it this brief. I actually found that in this instance (with the way I phrased and asked this question) that I wanted to keep it general and not too specific. This way, people are not too boxed in by the question as the concept of opinions is wide and far ranging. Just as you mentioned in your first paragraph.
And finally, you are most definitely not offending me. And thank you again for your contribution. I really appreciate it. Looking forward to more of this!
Ahh I see, as the topic has been rephrased I understand better now. With the way this has been written now, and with your explanation I would say that I 'strongly agree.' Thank you!
