Having a substance abuse problem myself (alcoholism) I must say that it's a seemingly impossible problem to solve. And that's with my substance being completely legal. If they made alcohol illegal tomorrow, as much as I try to follow the law and I don't want to ruin my life with alcohol I would probably fail to stay away from alcohol. Things are hard enough for a drug addict before we throw that already shattered mind into jail for doing something they had very little chance of controlling. I take an extreme position on drugs. I think they need to be legalized and reasonably accessible. All of them. Will this worsen our drug abuse problem? YES. Yes it absolutely will. In fact, it would be DEVASTATING. I even contend that we'd see a lot of people who weren't going to ruin their life with drugs, ruin their life with drugs, just by making those drugs more accessible. But being worried about the worsened drug problem when we are locking up entire generations of otherwise innocent people would be like being worried about water damage because a firefighter is hosing down your flaming house. Yes. I understand that there will be water damage, I don't reject that in the slightest. In fact, it's gonna be DEVASTATING. But your HOUSE is LITERALLY ON FIRE... let's worry about the water damage once the fire's out.
