**TL;DR - I think it is shameful how little effort English-native speakers put into learning another language, and I think this has to change** We all know that British stereotype right? Goes abroad and instead of learning a few words in the local language to get by, just speak English but louder to communicate. It is not only not helpful but also very ignorant and arrogant to assume everyone will help in English. Yes, of course, English is the global language, but it doesn’t mean we should juts sit back and relax when it comes to language learning. Language learning is not easy task, but it is done by so many to create international opportunities, whilst English speaking nations just take it for granted. Yet so many of us believe learning a new language will improve job opportunity, mental health and communication capabilities. We treat learning a language as a dream whilst the rest of the world see it as a reality. I believe that this needs changing and even if its just 20 words when you go on holiday, this stereotype needs to change.

English because learning a new language unless they need to is unnecessary. English is after all the worlds primary language. Most places that you go will not only have the original translation but also the English translation underneath. And besides no one should put any effort into anything they don’t want to if I don’t want to learn Spanish that’s fine and if you argument is that it helps you to be more cultured that’s ridiculous. If anything people who do not speak English should learn English not because they should suppress the culture but because it would be very beneficial to them because many things are in English in many countries.

That is, you generally learn a second language to learn a hub language of similar size or larger. If you speak English, there is little actual need to learn another language for simple communication purposes, as it is the largest hub language, and thus can be spoken to the widest variety of people. This is why native English-speakers are comparatively unlikely to be fluent in other languages. And in the case of North America, nearly the entire continent speaks English, and is isolated by oceans. In Europe, you could take a 6 hour drive and go from Polish to German to Dutch to French. In the United States, you could drive for a week and only ever hear English. Learning a second language is an absolute must for the sake of things like linguistic development and understanding of other cultures. But the Anglosphere's lack of language fluency doesn't come from laziness, it comes more from lack of necessity.
