The theory of ‘morality as cooperation’ (MAC) argues that morality is best understood as a collection of biological and cultural solutions to the problems of cooperation recurrent in human social life. MAC draws on evolutionary game theory to argue that, because there are many types of cooperation, there will be many types of morality. These include: family values, group loyalty, reciprocity, heroism, deference, fairness and property rights. While on face value this appears to be a plausible statement, I think this fails to recognise the difference between equity and equality. The former recognises that individuals are subject to many different circumstances, which means that equality does not always produce a fair result. If we treat everyone the same that would be giving two individuals the same resources without taking into account said circumstances. Instead, we need to treat people in regard to their situation. An individual coming from a lower socio-economic background would have less access to resources than another from a higher socio-economic background. As such it would be unfair to treat them equally in light of this.

Treating people the same is not the same as treating people equally. Not everybody has the same needs.

Equity not equality.

Not everyone should be treated the same for two reasons. The first reason is because of the difference between equality and equity. Everyone should have equal opportunity, but every individual is unique and do not have equal access to opportunity. Some people need extra support. This would not be possible if everyone were treated the same. The second reason is for the choices people can make. Certain people do not deserve to be treated as though they are equal because their choices and ideals do harm to others. Nazis, murderers, rapists, and the like are worse and should be treated worse so they are not normalized and accepted by society.
