Not to be confused with other forms of confinement, solitary confinement is cruel, and will only ever harm the mind of a likely already mentally ill person. Whatever positive behavior you THINK is gonna happen? Like better behavior or w/e? Just.. doesn't happen in practice. Some people can snap in just hours. In just a few days of solitary confinement, the mind can hallucinate. In weeks, some people will experience permanent damage to their personality. And we're doing this to people for months, for years, or for decades at a time, and it really needs to stop. We may need to separate people with physical barriers (we can't let a prisoner who keeps trying to kill everyone roam in the prisoner population normally), but that doesn't need to exclude ALL human contact. We don't need solitary confinement to punish prisoners. They're in prison. That's the punishment.

Jeffrey Dahmer. John Wayne Gacy. Ted Bundy. Probably the most dangerous: Adolf Hitler, because of his ability to convince so many people to commit horrifying atrocities against fellow human beings. Some people are such a detriment to society that they need to be isolated as far away from other humans as possible so as not to infect anyone else with their sickening ideas. Their own individual rights become null and void when they commit heinous acts against innocents who did nothing to deserve the horrific fate that they endured.
