There is a tendency among advocates (social, environmental, etc.) to rely on fatalism to convince people of the severity of “the cause”. Fatalism takes the tone of impending doom and spends an inordinate amount of time on the problems and what is at stake, with much less emphasis on solutions.
The goal of this approach is to evoke strong emotions such as fear and anger, in hopes that this will fuel the necessary change. However, research has shown that fatalism usually backfires and causes people to either feel hopeless/powerless, completely dismiss the claims, or, over time, become numb to the constant crises (known as compassion fatigue).
It is extremely important that people understand the severity of a given issue. But, if we want people to be willing to accept the issue as fact *and* feel empowered to do something about it, the task is to balance this sense of urgency with a clear plan of action.

Can you give us some examples?
And data on whether it works or not?

The following [article indicates some social science research that has been conducted regarding fatalism](https://bigthink.com/age-of-engagement/study-finds-that-fear-wont-dont-do-it-why-most-efforts-at-climate-change-communication-might-actually-backfire). More specifically, it does so through using climate change as an example.
It basically suggests that scientists, environmentalists and political leaders might "unintentionally trigger, disbelief, skepticism, or decreased concern among audiences" if they continue to focus mostly on the risks of climate change - as opposed to solution-based approaches.
