Fortune tellers are only real in the sense that they exist– not that they can actually see the future.

• Whether it be through palmistry, crystallomancy, or tarot card readings, fortune telling does indeed exist and come in many forms. However, there’s no way to actually predict the future; there are only educated guesses.
• There are many instances where consequences from actions can be predicted. Climate change, for example, has been predicted for years, but it came with scientific and real-world evidence to back it up. Other predictions such as, let’s say, childbearing prospects or potential love, are completely up to coincidence. If a prediction happens to come true, it may strengthen one’s belief in fortune telling, but it more likely comes down to coincidence or a subconscious effort on that person’s behalf to make the prediction happen.
• Fortune telling does not necessarily need to be “debunked” or thrown away on this basis though. For many, palmistry, crystallomancy, tarot, etc. are hobbies and enjoyable activities. For others, it is a deeply-rooted belief system. If one feels inspired by having their future potentially read to them, I don’t personally see a problem with it as long as one does not completely depend on fortune telling for every decision they make in life.

Never met anyone claiming to be a fortune teller who did it for free. If they tell people some vague things then a person can make it fit their circumstances. I always wonder why they work with initials so much? I think they take advantage of vulnerable people who are looking for answers. Maybe they hear voices in their head which they actually believe are the voices of the dead. This can be more accurately interpreted as a mental illness.

The ones that seem the most accurate are the ones who say the most vague codswallop and then at some point in your life there is something that remotely relates to that vague statement and the gullible people will think that means these fortune tellers have some divine power... its unfair that these people take your money and not necessarily lie to you, but sell you a false truth

The claim that fortune tellers can genuinely predict the future lacks scientific credibility and is not supported by empirical evidence.

For:

Psychological Comfort: Some people find comfort or guidance in fortune telling. The process may help individuals reflect on their lives, set goals, or confront difficult decisions, even if the predictions themselves are not accurate.

Cultural and Traditional Significance: In many cultures, fortune telling holds traditional or spiritual value. For those who view it through a cultural lens, it can serve a ritualistic or symbolic role.

Against:

Lack of Scientific Evidence: No controlled studies have ever demonstrated that fortune tellers possess the ability to predict future events. Techniques used—such as tarot cards, palm reading, or astrology—have no proven basis for forecasting outcomes beyond chance.

Cold Reading and Vagueness: Many fortune tellers rely on vague statements, generalizations, and reading cues from the person they're speaking to—a method known as cold reading. These techniques create the illusion of foresight but do not reflect real predictive ability.

Exploitation Risks: Belief in fortune telling can lead to exploitation. Vulnerable individuals may make serious life decisions based on these predictions, sometimes at great personal or financial cost.

Confirmation Bias: People often remember the predictions that seem to come true and forget the ones that don’t, reinforcing false beliefs in fortune tellers’ accuracy.

TL;DR: if they could, they wouldn't need your money

If anybody was able to truly tell the future, they would be playing the betting markets (incl. the financial markets and the lottery) and sit quiet. Or they would be entrepreneurs, knowing exactly what will be in demand.
They might even be true philanthropes and really interested in helping people with their gift.
But if they have a stall at the fairgrounds and ask for your money, they likely are neither, and certainly not able to tell the future in any meaningful way.
