Thomas Jefferson declared in 1787: “…were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” To govern ourselves, to understand our challenges and take the right decisions in response, we need to be properly informed. We need academics, journalists and the media. Government without free media is like government without an opposition. More than anything else, opposition is what defines democracy.

Its kind of funny to see the mainstream press talk about the importance of press freedom when they get criticized by someone powerful, but then ignore it when they denounce smaller individuals or brands.
