Some hedge funds add tremendous value, but overall hedge funds fail to beat indices, and they capture a large portion of the returns instead of their clients. Furthermore, research shows that the actual asset weighted returns are far lower than advertised. Small funds do well, and larger funds tend to do worse yet the quoted annualized IRR is always flattered and higher than actual cash returns.
