Philosophically, a hotdog is a sandwich. It has two slices of bread around a piece of meat. But a hot dog is not a sandwich in spirit. instinctually, when you look at a sandwich you don't think "wow that hot dog looks tasty."
So basically a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square. A hot dog is technically a sandwich but in every other conceivable way, it is not.
🌭 "Instinctually, when you look at a sandwich you don't think "wow that hot dog looks tasty."" - that would be the argument you'd make if you thought a sandwich was a hotdog, which is obviously insane and likely dangerous... 🥪
But I have to say if I walked up to a hotdog stall with a friend and they turned to me and asked me whether I wanted my sandwich with ketchup or mustard, I would radically rethink our friendship.
A hot dog bun is most definitely not two slices of bread -- it is one singular mini loaf which has been sliced nearly in half, but not completely severed. The resulting bun is still intact enough to be considered one solid piece.
This, therfore, changes the course of the argument considerably. If one's definition of a sandwich hinges on the fact that it must consist of two separate slices of bread around a piece of meat, then a hotdog obviously does not qualify. However, if the only condition that needs to be met is that there must be meat encased in bread, then the scope of qualifying dishes expands considerably. So, this specification needs to be clarified.
The presupposition that meat is the only possible sandwich filling is another matter entirely.
A hotdog is most definitely not a sandwich!
While the Merriam Webster dictionary defines a sandwich as, two or more slices of bread or a split roll with a filling in between. The British Sandwich Association goes on to define a sandwich as, any form of bread with a filling, generally assembled cold - this includes traditional wedge sandwiches, as well as filled rolls, baguettes, pitta, bloomers, wraps and bagels.
Additionally, the Merriam Webster dictionary defines a hotdog as a frankfurter with a typically mild flavor that is heated and usually served in a long, split roll.
So here already these definitions are providing evidence that a hotdog and a sandwich are not the same, besides the visible physical appearance that we can clearly see for ourselves. Also, another very important difference to note here between these two is that a sandwich in most instances has a cold filling and a hotdog in most instances has a hot or heated filling.
What’s more, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council makes a good point in noting that we are limiting a hotdog’s significance by saying that it is just a sandwich – equaling it to calling the Dalai Lama ‘just a guy’. I mean, this is a really good point since there are specifically hotdog eating contests/challenges and then sandwich eating contests/challenges, respectively.
Here then, are actual findings based on evidence that a hotdog is most definitely not a sandwich. Especially with the British Sandwich Association confirming that around 57% of all commercially bought sandwiches are made with traditional square sandwich bread. They even go so far as clarifying that burgers and other associate products are not considered to be a sandwich or fall under the sandwich category.

TL;DR — It is meat between bread - if that is not a sandwich then what is?
In simple terms, a sandwich is ["two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between”] (https://www.allrecipes.com/article/is-a-hot-dog-a-sandwich/). By that definition, a hot dog is a sandwich.
Some will quibble that a hot dog is in a category of its own, but it nevertheless comes under the general rubric of a sandwich. Some will also say that a hot dog is not a sandwich because it is only one piece of bread cut in half. Well, could we not say the same about a ham and cheese roll for example? The roll is cut in half to form two halves, but people are not saying that is not a sandwich. A hot dog satisfies the most basic conditions of a sandwich and so we should categorise it thusly.
Are people really not saying a ham and cheese roll is not a sandwich?
It’s actually a taco.
A sandwich is where there is bread above and below the middle contents. A hotdog had bread to the side of the middle contents. If you want it to be a sandwich, eat it sideways.
😂
A hot dog is not a sandwich.
Origin: German immigrants brought their culinary traditions, including these sausages, to the United States in the 19th century, where the modern hot dog was developed and popularized.
A hot dog is something that tends to give people who eat them, thoughts, or thoughts and memories of the usa.
Compare a hot dog, with lettice and a slice of ham in between buttered bread. One does not excite the imagination the other does.
It would be like calling a pizza a bit of baked dough with interesting stuff on top.
Instead a pizza is, a dish of Italian origin, consisting of a flat round base of dough baked with a topping of tomatoes and cheese, typically with added meat, fish, or vegetables; that is typically shared.
One excites the imagination of it's Italian origin, and social significance, the other leaves a person unexcited by it's social aspect.
Consider your reaction, when you picture an american vendor in the sidewalk of a busy american street, preparing a hotdog for a customer and saying: "Do you want mustard on that?"
What the vendor said, brought the scene and sense of a hotdog alive in your imagination didn't it?
A hot dog is not a sandwich.
