**Science suggests that telepathy is possible**
• From [ancient lore](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4791389/) to [popular culture](https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/nightlife/reading-minds-in-pop-culture/8734816), the possibility of telepathy has continued to fascinate humans. Telepathy is the practice of communication through only the mind; the transfer of thoughts from one person to another at a distance, without use of our known senses.
• Throughout history and all over the world, there have been countless reports of telepathy. Some may argue that the sheer number of these support its existence.
• In the early 20th century, telepathy became zeitgeist and many scientists set up experiments to test its credibility. In the 1930s, the psychologist [J.B Rhine](https://www.apa.org/monitor/2008/04/zener) notably tested people for telepathic abilities by using a set of playing cards designed by Karl Zener: subjects had to name the card without seeing it. As several of his subjects consistently named correct cards at a significantly higher rate than chance, Rhine argued that this supported the possibility of telepathy.
• In recent years, scientists have successfully invented [‘brain-to-brain interfaces’ (BBIs)](https://theconversation.com/brain-to-brain-interfaces-the-science-of-telepathy-37926) which allow for thoughts to be transmitted between humans without any other form of communication. Through the use of magnetic stimulation and natural electrical brain currents, the study managed to create a basic communication system out of only brain signals and electrical pulses. In August 2014, scientists claimed to have [successfully transmitted thought](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/science/first-brain-to-brain-communication-in-humans-demonstrated/articleshow/41701959.cms?from=mdr) between humans from India to France.

**Some psychologists believe that it's more about mirror neurons, emulation, modeling, and behavior, at least for short distance communication.**
- Telepathy for short distances might be more about mirror neurons than anything else: [Studies](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4069857/) have shown that even when people are not "actively interacting" or engaged with another person, their mirror neurons can still be engaged, meaning "non-participatory action-viewing" may not be as passive as we think since non-engagement with people is thus not necessarily an actually isolated activity.
- That means that we are very good at "reading" people's minds because there are [automatic mirroring processes](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1044835/) that happen in the brain not only when we are engaged directly with someone (viewing them and their actions actively) but also, intriguingly, when we are passively taking in information about someone (viewing them without any forms of engagement or interaction---or even without knowing consciously that we are gathering information about them at all!).
- This could provide an interesting explanation for at least cases of short-distance telepathy, since the neurons mirror the processes that are happening for us without our even having the chance to realize it or make note of it in any interactive way.
