**TLDR**: The TV show *Hunters* has a tonal problem, in which it tries to juggle the severity and horrors of the Holocaust, with its pulpy comic-book tone. This coupled with its invention of Holocaust torture techniques for shock value means the show ends up undermining the reality of what went on, in a time when white supremacy is on the rise again. The show's premise focuses on a group of Nazi Hunters in the 70's, tracking down and killing Nazis in America who were brought over after WW2. Whilst this is based on the real life actions of Simon Wiesenthal, he never attacked or harmed the Nazis; he tracked them down and informed the authorities. Instead the show fulfills a revenge fantasy, in which the same violence shown towards Jews during the holocaust is enacted on those who perpetrated that violence. In one particular moment of historical revisionism, *Hunters* depicts the Nazis at Auschwitz forcing Jewish prisoners to play a game of human chess, where they must kill the 'piece' they capture. There is no documented evidence that something like this ever happened, and will no doubt lead some viewers to go "oh phew" when they take to google to see if it did. This is problematic, as it undermines the real barbarism that happened during the Holocaust in favor of a more cartoonishly evil depiction of events. The Auschwitz memorial museum also took issue with the scene saying that it was 'not only dangerous foolishness and caricature, it also welcomes future deniers' [1]. Holocaust denial is reported to be on the rise, as survivors are passing away, and things such as this only serve to muddy a time that should not be soon forgotten. As the show progresses, the violence on screen becomes more and more common, to the point where the show turns into a form of torture-porn. The tone shifts from an attempt to look at Holocaust trauma and the lingering anger of its survivors, to a fantastical mystery with a plot twist that undermines any of that commentary on violence, in which **(Spoilers)** the head of the Nazi hunters turns out to be a Nazi himself, who has had plastic surgery to 'look Jewish'. As such, the violence against the Nazis is being spear-headed by a Nazi, and any insight into the catharsis of revenge is lost. Ultimately, whilst *Hunters* is undeniably a well made and slick show, its snubbing of real world history in favor of caricature and shock value did not sit well for me, particularly in a time when white supremacy and Holocaust denial is on the rise. It was not the show we needed right now, and I feel the show-runners missed an opportunity to educate us on the realities of the Holocaust, whilst still retaining some of its pulpy tone.
