**TL;DR Although he is the greatest and most successful CEO of all time, Jeff Bezos’ limited humanity despite his immense fortune is what prevents him from truly being great.**
Jeff Bezos is one of the most successful and rich CEOs that we have seen in history, but this does not necessarily make him the greatest. With his net worth currently at *$190.8 billion*, making over $500 million every day, there is much potential for Bezos to be a great person and invest his money in charities and other forces for good in the world. [1] However, he does not. In 2019 when the Amazon rainforest was being rapidly lost to a fire, not once did Bezos provide any form of aid to help put out the flames – despite being the richest man on earth. Similarly, Bezos only donated a million Australian dollars which is roughly $690,000 in USD for wildfire aid in 2020. That might sound like a lot, but this is really pocket-money for the man who was worth $145 billion at the time. Elton John and Metallica donated more than Bezos did to help put out the wildfires, despite having minute amounts of wealth compared to him. [2] Although Bezos ranks higher in net worth than other billionaires like Gates and Zuckerberg, he does not donate as much money as they have to charities, between 2000-2017 *The Chronicle of Philanthropy* estimated that Bezos donated 0.1 percent of his wealth to charities annually. [3]
Bezos is the richest CEO of the internet era, but he is not the greatest. His apparent lack of empathy towards others and unwillingness to part with his any amount of his immense fortune, even to good causes, makes him cruel and unkind. I applaud him for his smart business ventures but his humanity should also define his greatness, and this is where he lacks.
