**TL;DR Publicly funded institutions guarantee service to all, but there needs to be more stringent regulatory measures** (Please note that my response is largely in reference to debates about the BBC in the UK, and whether or not the license fee is justified) The BBC is one of the most highly-coveted organisations around the world, but it also faces some of the toughest criticism due to the public funding it receives. Whilst it offers a range of services that no other broadcaster can parallel, there are significant issues to be addressed. The benefits of a publicly funded broadcasting service include: • There is [no advertising](https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/analysis-why-bbc-remain-ad-free-zone-advertising-bbc-will-not-says-mindshares-mandy-pooler-bring-down-cost-advertising-tv-foolish-decision-tinker/66432) due to the financial structure of publicly funded broadcasters • Having a license fee grants the BBC [editorial independence and impartiality](https://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidelines/impartiality) as the broadcaster is not beholden to sponsors • Increased accountability means that the BBC must act according to [public interest](https://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidelines/editorial-standards) However, there are considerable qualms: • There is little regulation as to both how democratic and [representative](https://www.politicshome.com/news/article/jeremy-corbyn-calls-for-bbc-directors-to-face-election-as-he-targets-failing-media) public broadcasters can truly be • The BBC has failed to fund [minority cultures and languages](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/apr/03/welsh-broadcasting-campaigner-faces-jail-over-tv-licence-protest) • As the cost of living increases, [the price of the license fee is too high](https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1425261/BBC-news-TV-licence-fee-latest-funding-row-taxpayer-funding-update-vn) for many people, and is not scaled according to income as with other taxes. Therefore whilst I disagree with this statement due to its somewhat lack of nuance, I recognise the need for a better system than the one currently in existence.

**Broadcasting institutions that serve public rather than private interests should be protected.** - The public funding for [the BBC] (https://www.politics.co.uk/reference/bbc-licence-fee/#:~:text=All%20revenue%20collected%20through%20'TV,(until%2031%20December%202027) works through charging a licensing fee to anyone in the UK who owns a television box. This fee (about [40p per day] (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/bbc-tv-licence-fee-increase-ps159-b919024.html) per household) goes towards producing independent, unbiased content. - The promise of independent and unbiased content [stems from] (https://www.britannica.com/topic/British-Broadcasting-Corporation) the BBC's publicly generated funds. Without the stimulus of public funding, the [privatisation] (https://aceproject.org/ace-en/topics/me/meb/meb03a/meb03a02) of main media companies becomes easy. - Because no system is perfect, the content produced and the lines taken by the BBC does not always fit within these content guidelines. Institutions should constantly reevaluate what's going out on their platforms. But the way to respond to these issues is through [considered reform] (https://www.redpepper.org.uk/bbc-reform/), not abolition.
