**TL;DR- I voted disagree on this, as homosexuality is completely natural. However, I've had a thought just now- many LGBTQ+ people may not *feel* like their sexuality is natural if they've grown up in a heteronormative society.** In some parts of the world, things are slowly changing for the better. But with years and years of lack of representation, lack of education, LGBTQ+ erasure, general homophobia, etc. many people grow up seeing heterosexuality as default, as normal, with anything else being abnormal. This is getting better in some places but is still very much the case. Compulsory heterosexuality is a term popularised by Adrienne Rich- [in her 1980 essay *Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence*. Rich argued that heterosexuality is ingrained in individuals from birth, and thus individuals are assumed to be heterosexual until proven otherwise.] (https://www.womensrepublic.net/compulsory-heterosexuality-and-me/) This is also why so many people don't realise that they're LGBTQ+ until later on in their lives, and then look back on their younger years and in some cases, wonder how they didn't figure it out sooner (the answer is compulsory heterosexuality and heteronormativity). This has had an impact on the lives of many LGBTQ+ people, such as Catherine Shuttleworth, who shares her experiences through her article in *Women's Republic*: > ["[After coming out]I still had no ‘weight off my shoulders’ as I thought would happen. I still felt like I had to conceal a lot of who I am, and I rarely spoke about women I had crushes on for about a year after I came out. Deep down, younger me was still terrified. Younger me still thought I was weird and the anomaly. There was even a period of time where I tried to ‘turn myself straight'."] (https://www.womensrepublic.net/compulsory-heterosexuality-and-me/) So, as a society we need to stop treating 'gay' like a swear word in front of children, we need LGBTQ+ inclusion in education, in TV shows ([a gay wedding in *Arthur*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVLFapnKEms) was a small but significant step forward in everyday LGBTQ+ inclusivity), we need to stop assuming, and through these small yet effective changes, less LGBTQ+ people will feel as if their sexuality is not natural.

Could you link either a video or article about the gay wedding scene in *Arthur*? I'd vaguely heard of the show, but could not have told you the name of it...
··
Sure! It's there now ☺️

I dunno man. My sexuality feels pretty natural to me.

While some people can go prison-gay, and some people definitely do get roped into being LGBT whether by peer-pressure, societal conditioning, and other environmental factors, not everyone does, and also some people genuinely are just "gay gay". I mean, why else are there historical records of lesbian/gay people in 1920's America? I will admit that the amount of "genuine LGBT" are definitely a lot lower than those who are just in it because it's trendy. Ultimately, I believe that being genuinely romantically attracted to a person of a certain sex is the only factor in determining where you fall in the sexuality spectrum. Physical attraction can be highly fluid and manipulated, but the romantic qualities of men and women are set in stone.
··
What does it mean to be "genuinely" LGBT? Like, what's an example of NON-genuine LGBT people?
··
No one decides to join an oppressed group because it's "trendy".

Homosexuality is common in nature. That doesn't tell us if it's good or bad, but it does tell us it's natural. This is simply an objective fact. There's nothing to argue about.

The question states that homosexual people cannot feel that theirhmosexuality is normal. It is difficult to tell what people feel on the inside. I listen/read what people say they feel and what they say they believe and assume that is an honest account, unless I have evidence to the contrary. The evidence to the contrary could be their actions. However in any court of law any action that someone performs, cannot prove the feelings that are behind it. This can be done by deduction from the circumstances, but mostly it is done by listening to what the person claims their emotions were at the time of their actions. Clearly many homosexual people say that they believe and feel that their homosexuality feels normal because they believe it is normal. I do not think, I or anyone else, can honestly dispute their claim as other people's feelings are mostly knowable, by their claims. (I suppose some experts in body language or lie detecting might say they can see through a false claim. But even evidence gathered by this method is only reliable to some extent.) I think we must conclude, based on our respect for every law abiding, tax paying, faction of society, that homosexual people's feelings are what they claim they are.

You've taken this in a way I wouldn't have understood it (I read the opinion as suggesting there's nothing 'natural' about being homosexual) and you make such a great point about the feeling aspect of this. Loved reading.

Thanks Turi

Nobody can naturally feel homosexual because its weird imagining a relationship with the people both being the same gender. For thousands of years humans have been attracted to the opposite sex but being attracted to the same sex, its a little weird to me.
