It's also their responsibility to provide a reasonable level of safety for the public and their employees.

The only responsibility to society that a company has is to deliver a profit to it's shareholders, is undeniably true. Often when a company claims to have motives other than this, the company is merely paying lip service to those who wish to dress up the real motives of business, in clothes of "social responsibility". They do this, because it is currently seen as a good thing to have a socially caring face and the business fears losing gains, unless it has a warm friendly caring face. A business is caring and socially responsible when it pays it's taxes and stays within the law in it's business practices. Laws and taxes are part of society and insure that those situations, people and things, society agrees to be cared for and respected, are cared for and respected. A business may wish to concentrate some of it's taxes in avoiding paying taxes by looking for loopholes but this is still within the law. Therefore business should concentrate in it's actions on staying within the law, to a lesser extent paying it's taxes and getting it's shareholders a big profit and leave the how and why's of being socially responsible to those who are elected or specialise in understanding or representing, or acting upon, issues of social responsiblity
