The only things racism requires are prejudice, stereotyping, and hatred or intolerance.
For example, to say that all white people are racist (as many people do) is, in itself, racist. It's perpetuating a harmful stereotype that inspires hatred and exacerbates an already dire problem. White people become resentful, and are less willing to let go of their own prejudices, which makes things even worse for non-whites. It becomes a neverending cycle, and it needs to stop on all sides if we are to move forward.
Don't mistake my words as blaming non-whites: whites are still to blame for 90% of the racism problem. But combating fire with fire only makes the bigger fire stronger.
i would say racism in the west if you go to india the natives are responsible for 90% of the racism
Or basically any country for that matter. In my homeland of Tanzania people will sometimes just murder a whole bunch of folks from a village of a different race, just because. White western people are by far the least racist in the world. Immigration stats demonstrate that.
thats pretty crazy japan is pretty hostile to immigrants but they like tourists. Zimbabwe seized the farms from white people because of colonialism but then gave them to people that werent farmers. I think as whole people arent racist most would like to move to a foreign country to retire for example.
Yes the Japanese are extremely hospitable but not accepting of foreigners. And it works very well for them. Most Asian cultures are like that in my experience.
White people generally do not experience systemic racism, with a few exceptions in certain country. You personally can have implicit racial bias against any group, including whites.
i think that's down to most white people living in the west if your the majority racism is less likely to happen
There is a disturbing trend in American society to re-define words to better suit the needs of a particular group. It must stop.
This question isn't very interesting, all its asking about is the meaning of a word, and some people take words to mean different things but it doesn't really matter that much.
If someone were to say a black person were being racist to a white person and someone else said, that's not possible, racism = prejudice + power, person A will just say "okay, they're being prejudiced then"

In theory, I think you're right. Words shouldn't get in the way of conversation...
In practice, I think this is the fault line of the culture wars.
This prompt is so easily confused because when this definition of racism was popularized, it was coming from a sociological standpoint. Different terms have a different meaning, it depends on context. Taken out of context, this idea sounds silly. Like, yeah, duh, black people can be racist towards white people. If a black person doesn't support mixed race couples or hates white people, that would be racist.
If the term racism is viewed from a sociological standpoint, it's a detached categorization to critique power structures/systems and how they treat race. The examples I gave before would be considered prejudice and discrimination, but not racism. This is all conflict theory and it has nothing to do with a black person who doesn't like white people. It's the lens that we understand social systems.

I think the Opinion is about the definition of racism, and whether we understand it as simple discrimination or from, as you rightly describe it, the ‘sociological’ perspective?
There is a difference between "racism" and "racist" which means there are issues in the phrasing of this opinion. Anyone can be racist, regardless of their own race. For example, a black person saying "all white people are evil because they are white" would be racist, but it would not be an example of racism as racism requires structural and institutional power that, in terms of race, only white people have.
Maybe in your context but not in many parts of the world. Many black politicians in South Africa and Zimbabwe have made statements almost exactly like what you said and they absolutely do have structural and institutional power.
