Four years of the Trump administration has damaged the reputation of the Republican Party through an apparent decline of their democratic values. This concern has escalated drastically during the Trump administration’s last year in office through several attempts to hinder the democratic process, which raises national security concerns at home and abroad. Former U.S. defense secretaries published a severe opinion piece against outgoing President Donald Trump in January 2021, driven by national concerns over the imposition of martial law to devoid the 2020 election (Swan, 2020). The former secretaries were also concern that the Defense Department political appointees loyal to President Trump had been attempting to obstruct the Biden transition after canceling briefings with the incoming administration and cause institutional turmoil by pulling out of Afghanistan and Iraq without a viable exit solution (Detsch, 2021). This is not solely a Trump administration issue; attempts by Republican policymakers to overturn election results in the contested states won by Democratic nominee Joe Biden represented a drastic escalation of a trend toward Republican authoritarianism. Despite Both Democratic and Republican election officials across the country have reported minimal irregularities during the 2020 election, 2/3 of House Republicans and a majority of Republican state’s Attorney Generals support the presidents remarks of election fraud (Ingraham, 2020). This election fraud resentment led to the storming of the capital which not only threatens the livelihoods of elected officials, but also exposed potential exploits that Russia, China, and Iran could take advantage of in the upcoming protests planned in all 50 states (Lee, 2021). First of all, I agree with you that the Republicans we see storming the capitol building are definitely a threat to national security. It is also true that, since 1994, far-right extremist groups have accounted for more domestic terrorist acts and plots than any other group (1). However, as much as I personally do not find myself in alignment with most Republican values, I'm not sure I'm completely convinced that it is the entire Republican Party we should be concerned about. For all of the Republicans who still approve of Trump, and even of the capitol riot, there are also plenty who do not. I've even heard rumors of a party split, but as that has not happened yet, that means that there are still a decent amount of people who still identify with the Republican Party because there is no other option (that aligns with their beliefs) but do not support the extremism that has been happening as of late. Even McConnell, a staunch conservative, has expressed grievances about the state that Trump has imposed upon the Republican Party and is open to impeaching him. I'd argue that the true culprit here is the two party system, which has the potential to trigger our tribalistic instincts, forcing people to pick the group they most identify with and fiercely defend it to preserve their own interests. It requires people to choose what they feel most passionate about and potentially sacrifice everything else on the ballot. This contributes to much of the extremism that we see today, as it creates an us vs them dynamic where, as unproductive as it sounds, the more scrutiny a party (or members thereof) is under (as the Republican Party has been under the past few years), the firmer its members stand by it. And I think that lumping everyone that belongs to a broad party together as a national threat poses the risk of 1. encouraging the left to disregard any information or perspectives that come from the right, and 2. to cause the right to become defensive and take up an even harsher position. So, ultimately, although the opinion that much of the Republican Party is straying into dangerous territory may have some merit, it might be more helpful to think of this issue and its solution in terms of expanding the options people can choose from so they don't have to justify the extremism in order to vote the way they want to on, say, taxes, rather than invalidating a good amount of people's views by grouping them together with extremists as a national threat. Several GOP politicians have announced that they are leaving the Republican Party and registering as independent. All political parties have internal differences. The defining factor of a party, however, depends on how it governs. A party becomes dangerous when it governs dangerously, not when every member of the party becomes dangerous. The current GOP has become significantly compromised by the Trump cult of personality. The erosion has taken over enough of the party that it can no longer govern responsibly. Despite its many sane members, the modern-day GOP represents a national security threat. The corruption of the GOP starts at the grassroots. Despite the reckless lame-duck session, the GOP base has stood with the former President. The majority of GOP voters consider Trump a good influence and would favor him as a candidate for 2024. [1] More alarmingly, around 30% of GOP voters believe in the QAnon and endorse political violence in some form. [2] Their preferences cements the GOP as a reckless party in the foreseeable future. One can point out the other side of the statistics. Many GOP voters do not like conspiracy theories or violence. However, the irrational fraction has so far exercised far more influence within the party even after the January 6 insurrection. Despite flirting with conspiracy theories and trying to overturn the 2020 election, the Arizona GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward won her reelection within the party. [4] Even with significant evidence, only ten Representatives and seven Senators from the GOP voted to impeach or convict Trump. Many rational GOP voters and politicians want a serious GOP. The United States of America needs and deserves a serious GOP. However, the party has so far failed to reckon with its increasing descent into madness.
