I highly doubt a police officer would say to the victim of a car accident that if they didn’t want to get into an accident, they shouldn’t have driven the car. This extends to cyber-bullying online and the blaming of the victim. An individual consenting to intimate videos or pictures of themselves and sending them to another person is not them consenting to those videos and pictures being shared to anyone else. This can result in the victim experiencing large amounts of hate online and the criminal justice process also displaying these biases when going through court. This has resulted in issues that contribute to the lack of prosecutions for revenge porn. A communications crime means victims are not granted anonymity or supported to the extent they are in a sexual crime. This leads to victims experiencing further harassment online and can further damage an individuals mental health. Resulting from this, many victims decide to not continue with the prosecution process and are understandably quick to drop charges.
