**If Scots want Scotland to be independent, it should be** • As an English person, I don’t feel entitled to decisions over the governance of someone else’s country. I think that only Scottish citizens should decide whether Scotland should be independent or not, as it would affect them the most. • Many Scots feel that they are not represented effectively in government, which is held in Westminster, 382 miles away from Scotland’s border. The UK government represents 4 different countries which arguably have four different sets of political and economical needs. Many argue that the government [serves the needs of England](https://www.thenational.scot/politics/18052738.great-british-state-reflects-largest-country/) (and particularly the South of England) disproportionately above the others. • In the [2014 Scottish Independence Referendum](https://www.bbc.com/news/events/scotland-decides/results), the people of Scotland voted to stay in the United Kingdom, with 55.3% voting to remain and 44.7% voting to leave. However, many speculate that a re-vote would now yield different results post-Brexit. In the 2016 EU referendum, whilst the UK as a whole voted to leave the EU, Scotland [unanimously voted to remain](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/eu_referendum/results).

As an English person I sometimes think we should hand them over to themselves. Let them go independent, run their country into the ground, watch all their social and economic issues multiply and eventually rescue them by letting them rejoin Britain and we can have a big collective, nationwide "I told you so".
