There is already a rather strong association with inhibiting or shaming sex and sexualization, and higher rates of violence, depression, and other social unease.

In the USA this is compounded. Simple nudity has been enough to jump movies to near-adult ratings, while violence hardly gets the rating to budge. We are shocked by a female nipple or male genitalia, but the torture scenes or mass murders 5 minutes prior barely raise eyebrows.

In essence, we raise people to be sexually-frustrated warriors, and then wonder why we look for war.

Not talking about sex is harmful for a multitude of reasons. It can lead to shame if an individual feels their experience differs from the perceived standard. It can mean people only learn about it from porn and have unrealistic ideas that are detrimental to them and their partners. It can be isolating to wonder if something is normal, lead to recklessness at the hands of ignorance and thus more unwanted pregnancies and diseases that could have been preventable. It makes it harder to open up about being violated and children may be unable to describe what happened to them as there is a shame around the terminology due to the stigma. Asexual people may feel pressure to conform to the mould and never realise they feel differently about it and in a sex-obsessed world to not talk about it in a healthy and productive way is simply dangerous and foolish. It is not only the duty of parents, who often do not explore the topic effectively, but sex education should be mandatory and handled with care.

In the strictest sense, I agree that some of the contemporary taboos around sexuality are harmful, but I suspect the subtext to this question is “Would we be better off without some or all such taboos?”, which is more nuanced.

If we don’t live in a world with some taboos around promiscuity and ‘deviant’ forms of sexuality then we’ll end up living in a world with different taboos around sexual conservatism. For example, people being shamed for being prudish/frigid/vanilla or assumed to be sexually unfulfilled/repressed, etc.

Living in a world without any pressure is utopian. We can’t get rid of taboos or ideals, we can only replace them. So, the question is, would we rather live with traditional evils or modern ones?
