The US federal government is now immensely larger and more controlling than it was when any of the southern states joined the union. A union of 50 different states is incredibly ambitious and nothing else like it really exists. I can totally see why many states would want to leave at this point. Particularly as the federal government seems to be failing to uphold certain parts of the constitution.
