**Maybe ‘White Fragility’ exists, but is this term useful in moving towards an anti-racist society?** • ‘White Fragility’ is a term coined in 2011 by the [white academic Robin DiAngelo](https://libjournal.uncg.edu/ijcp/article/viewFile/249/116) in her discussions of race. DiAngelo defines it as “a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable [to white people], triggering a range of defensive moves […] These behaviours, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium.”. • DiAngelo argues that all white people are intrinsically racist against black people, due to their privileged position within a racist society, and that they must work to confronting their inner racial prejudice. She believes that understanding [white fragility](https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2020/jun/26/how-white-fragility-obstructs-the-fight-against-racism-video-explainer) is key to this. • In many ways, we can observe DiAngelo’s concept played out in real life. All over [social media](https://www.forbes.com/sites/janicegassam/2021/01/08/social-media-continues-to-amplify-white-supremacy-and-suppress-anti-racism/?sh=33e5fa514170), there are examples of white people becoming annoyed, defensive, upset, or aggressive in conversations about race. • However, others believe that the term ‘White Fragility’ is unhelpfully polarising and hinders anti-racist progress. The journalist [Chidozie Obasi](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/culture/a32812084/white-fragility-what-is-it/) writes that the term itself “amplifies the idea that Black people can’t discuss race with white people because they’re afraid to cause offence or discomfort”. [John McWhorter](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/dehumanizing-condescension-white-fragility/614146/) goes as far as to find DiAngelo’s argument condescending towards black people and overly-condemning to white; he likens DiAngelo’s argument for the intrinsic racism of white people to “original sin”.

Current claims of systemic racism is a construct of liberal elites who are out of touch with reality. They can not point to one thing prohibited to blacks because of the color of their skin.
