Especially for countries that claim to embody liberalist values of universal rights, it is hypocritical to treat suspects in such degrading ways and as if they have already been found guilty. • Moreover, even from a consequentialist perspective, torture cannot ever be justified. One reason for this is that the psychological impact of torture makes the suspect less able to recall memories accurately, thus diminishing the quality of information received, which is not ideal for life-and-death situations such as terrorism. A second reason for this is that the suspect ends up over-speaking as a way to end the torture. Again, this can lead to more inaccurate information being provided. More seriously, it can lead to the suspect confessing to crimes that they did not commit, which negatively impacts the administration of justice.
