"The Golden Rule" as it were, is an excellent starting point for grasping morality, especially for children. But that's all it is: A starting point. To truly be good to each other, we need to try to see things from the perspective of people other than ourselves. SO... for instance, I want people to be frank with me. I want them to not be afraid of using words like "fag" around me just because I'm bi. I don't believe in curse words, really. I want them to be brutally critical and pull no punches. Even meanness towards me has its place in constructive dialogue. I also love many offensive jokes, even when they're mocking my own demographic. SO... Naturally, I should freely use the N word around black people, right? Because >I< don't believe in curse words, and because >I< don't mind being called a "fag", >everyone else< should ALSO get on board with my high tolerance of horrifically offensive language, right? Wrong. Treat others, within reason, as THEY would like to be treated.

Treat others as *they* would like to be treated.
