**Each vegan practices their diet by following their own personal rules. For some vegans, this may fall under their definition of veganism. For others, it may not.** * [Vegans](https://vegan.com/info/what/) generally abstain from eating all animal products, which means eliminating meat, poultry, dairy, and fish and focusing instead on plant-based foods. However, each vegan may practice this lifestyle for a different reason. * For example, some vegans have dietary restrictions that make a vegan diet a more reasonable choice for their health. Others may be seeking to [reduce their carbon footprint](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/veganism-environmental-impact-planet-reduced-plant-based-diet-humans-study-a8378631.html) and consume more ethically-sourced foods. Either way, there’s going to be some nuance to every vegan’s point of view. One vegan may be strictly against *all* animal products, no matter the cause of death. Another may argue that the process of slaughtering animals is unhealthy and immoral, but natural death is not, and therefore they may eat a naturally deceased animal.

**I think it depends on one’s reasoning for being vegan.** - If you are vegan because you don’t agree with the killing of animals for human consumption, then it might seem plausible from an ethical standpoint to eat an animal that has died of natural causes. - However, there are many other reasons that one chooses to become a vegan. Such reasons are, but not limited to, wanting to live a healthier lifestyle and the ethical issues regarding inhumane conditions of animals. Under such reasons, I don’t think one would care whether the animal died of natural causes and as such would still not choose to eat it. - Also for many [veganism isn’t just a dietary preference but a lifestyle choice.]( https://sentientmedia.org/vegan-lifestyle/) By this, I mean that they don’t just avoid consuming meat products but avoid using any products derived from animals. As the Vegan society articulates veganism is ‘“a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” This would mean that the natural death of the animal would not alter whether one would consume the meat.

But how are you exploiting or being cruel to an animal that's already dead?
