The only reason hybrids and EVs never took off was because manufacturers insisted on making them unappealing to produce a "false flag lesson" or sorts. "See. we tried making your hippiemobiles and nobody bought them." And when they did become appealing, they were immediately shut down, like the electric Rav-4 in the 90's. However, this did leave a bit of a vacuum of EV manufacturers that Tesla was able to fill, and they insisted their cars be designed to be supercars from the start. It didn't take long before Tesla became associated with crazy acceleration, and then EVs as a whole to follow. Now, most developed nations have some sort of EV-only mandate due within the next couple decades, and all of the major auto manufacturers are switching over. If you make your environmental car cool, then you can get a lot of people who otherwise aren't environmentalists making the environmentally-friendly decision. Your reach extends beyond your activism. Capitalism is simply a particular social force, like splitting the atom. When consciously directed, it's a sustainable force for good. When unregulated and unchecked, it is an unmatched destructive force. But if we want any of our climate initiatives to succeed, they must be socially-sustainable. Big government action is only good to get the ball rolling, but can be voted away at any time, so we can NOT afford to rely on them. But once the markets are trained, the market members will stop at nothing until market saturation is reached.
