**TL;DR Winter Olympics are more enjoyable to watch due to the unpredictable nature of events.** Winter Olympic events, such as Skiing, Snowboarding, Bobsleigh and Skeleton are undeniably more exciting in comparison to Summer Olympic events. Not only are the individual sports more unpredictable, with accidents, falls, crashes and thus disqualifications much more common, the overall league tables are also more contested than in the summer. One significant factor making Winter events more unpredictable is the speed at which they travel. The economist cited a study by the International Olympic Committee, where they calculated the average speed of male athletes/teams during competition. I have to disagree, I think that the summer Olympics are so much better. I think the summer Olympics is a bigger and more exciting event. It attracts more viewers and there just seems to be a more fun atmosphere surrounding the summer Olympics. The summer Olympics has all the original traditions and events. In fact, the summer Olympics of 100 years ago is still very similar to how it is today, except there have been even more great sports added to the game. For me, the winter Olympics are a nice companion to the summer games, however there is no chance that they can compete with the legacy of the summer Olympics. This legacy and the worldwide popularity of the summer Olympics is what makes it so much better than the winter version.

The Summer Olympics provide a ‘celebrity star power’ that the Winter Olympics does not. The Summer Games allow audiences to get involved and invested in the athletes of the games. If we look back at London 2012, we remember our Team GB star athletes such as Jess Ennis- Hill and Mo Farah. Of course they should continue, they are a great way at promoting winter sports and are very entertaining to watch. BUT they alienate many countries’ ability to join. Winter sports are easily done in a colder climates like Russia or parts of Austria, but otherwise, they can become quite expensive to practice. They exclude countries who do not have the ability to compete. This is where, in my opinion, the Summer Games prevail.
