These statements (#MaC) form part of the Morality as Cooperation Quiz What is morality? Where does it come from, and how does it work? And how and why do moral values vary, between individuals, and across cultures? The theory of ‘morality as cooperation’ (MAC) argues that morality is best understood as a collection of biological and cultural solutions to the problems of cooperation recurrent in human social life. MAC draws on evolutionary game theory to argue that, because there are many types of cooperation, there will be many types of morality. These include: family values, group loyalty, reciprocity, heroism, deference, fairness and property rights. Previous research suggests that these seven types of morality are evolutionarily-ancient, psychologically-distinct, and cross-culturally universal. Take the Quiz to work out what your particular mix looks like.

There are many circumstances where you might not be able to be loyal to your family due to your moral codes. The moral codes you might be loyal to, instead of being loyal to your family, might originate from your own reasoning, or might originate from society or might even originate from your family. Would you be loyal to your family, if you discovered a family member had engaged in paedophillic crimes, race hate crimes, or serial murder and had no intention of stopping? Would loyalty to your family involve calling the police, turning a blind eye, or helping that family member cover up? Would you be loyal if your family member was a spy to a rival company where you are an employee? or even a spy against a country you had allegiance to? Would you be loyal to your family if you happen to be born into a mafia crime family? Would you participate, turn a blind eye, or help to cover-up their crimes? Although these are extreme cases, these are dilemmas that people do face. Before saying that" you should be loyal to your family members" is an absolute rule that eveyone should follow, it is reasonable to consider them.
