Eternals · Patriotism · Political SpectrumNo one chooses their country of birth, so it’s foolish to be proud of itAgainst1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
I completely understand arguements for this point. However I think the majority of those voters miss one key aspect. Whilst it’s true we had no influence on our countries history and creation up until our birth. we all currently serve a role within our country. We are all part of one big movement and project that our country is becoming. We are the ones currently making history, no matter how small or ‘unimportant’ we may be. I think it’s that, the working together in an attempt to progress and the emotional attachments we have to our own countries that give us a reason to be proud. Whether we disagree with our government, monarchy, or ethos, we all have some a role to fill and we all have emotional attachments. We don’t all HAVE to be proud, but it is certainly not foolish TO be.
Biology · Eternals · Gender · PsychologyMen and Women are wired differentlyCommentary1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
I mean it’s objectively true. There are many differences between man and woman. Scientifically, psychologically, physically, mentally. But this gives no excuse to label one as better than the other. To allow one to have more power than the other. To allow any social difference purely based on this fact. Of course there are exceptions such as in sport. But our bodily functions should give no reason to hate or discriminate.
Affirmative Action · Education · Eternals · University · USAU.S. universities should adopt affirmative actionCommentary1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
Until we stop treating people differently, whether it be positive or negative, based on the colour of their skin, then racial division and discrimination will be present in society. It is a very simple concept and I’m completely baffled as to why humanity can’t accept it. We need to take a step away from our religious, historical, emotional and familial experiences and beliefs to see situations like this in it’s clear true reality. Of course we have cultural differences, we always will. But to truly overcome racial issues within society we need to let go of those things holding us back and see each other for what we really are. We are more than a colour, we are more than where we come from. We need to stop clinging to hate, and progress to a society where everything is based on character and merit. It must be emphasised that this message is applicable to all races. All people. We are one, so let’s act like it. Let’s stop gatekeeping who’s allowed to have an opinion on what based on skin color. Who’s better than who based on skin color. We call our society civilised and progressive but we are far from it. If we are to label ourselves we must act upon it. Let’s not be satisfied with just getting by. Unite, don’t fight.
Education · Eternals · Political Spectrum · SchoolSchools should not make classroom attendance compulsoryCommentary1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
The entire education system needs a shake up. A completely outdated system not tailored to modern society. Teachers with power complexes and no altruistic tendencies. The strict nature of school is of course necessary to some standard to reinforce key values, however, I remember my school days as a continuous bombardment of petty punishments for things that had no effect on my behaviour or education. The overall result of this lead to me hating school. I remember my most effective sessions being independent revision. Classroom attendance isn’t necessary. Most teacher lead lessons are regurgitating text book paragraphs or PowerPoint slides. A student is able to read this independently. Any questions can be asked to the teacher when needed. The main goal of the current education system is clearly to achieve qualifications rather than teach genuine skills or education needed for life ahead of these children. So why not allow students, if they work better in this style, as I did, to read these textbooks independently free from distraction, in the revision style of the student rather than a generic style used for the classroom and use the main role of the teacher to guide students in how to answer exam questions? Surely, if we keep the same goal of the current system this would be the most effective. (If students are clearly not performing the their best abilities outside of the classroom, of course it should be then made compulsory until they are able to work as they prefer to a good enough level)
Eternals · Gender · TransgenderYour gender is what you say it isCommentary1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
I agree that gender and sex are two different things, whether this is a new development in terms of the word itself or not. Therefore, yes, it doesn’t matter what gender a person identifies as, and nor should anyone be bothered about it either. It’s a choice on that persons behalf that doesn’t effect anyone else. However, it can be seen by others as taken too far when we express an unrealistic and ever growing amount of genders that seemingly are used based on mood rather than an identity as such. Whilst personally, I don’t care what people wish to identify as, others may be confused. And I think whilst it gets beyond the male, female, and trans spectrum this confusion is justified. The issue which then arises is the cold, harsh attacks on those people who are confused. People are quick to label them as misogynistic bigots and all kinds of unjustified terms. What this does is cause a further divide fuelled by the passions and emotions on both perspectives creating an unnecessary conflict that harms society’s progression. It is not the issue at hand most people take issue with, but the methods used when dealing with the issue. which to an extent i can certainly understand.
Cultural Relativism · Culture · Eternals · Political SpectrumThere are no savage and civilised peoples; there are only different culturesCommentary1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
Many people seem inherently selfish. I think humanity is conditioned into that, possibly instinctively to a certain point too. That’s why we believe our way is the right and only way. Who are we to declare that other people are savage or uncivilised? These very same people we call savages would in most cases believe we are the true savages. But when you take a step back away from all cultural, religious, historical, emotional and familial experiences and beliefs, it is most likely we are all uncivilised savages. We roam the earth in pursuit of our own selfish desires, as any other animal does. I think we need to realise we’re not as advanced as we think.
How to Live · Humour · SexismEnough with the sexist jokes, alreadyCommentary1 comment·Jul 13, 2021
A joke is a joke for a reason. We laugh because we are self aware, we know it is wrong, and for most that is where the humour stems from. Not to mention that we all have different views. What you find wrong may differ to what another finds wrong. But being ‘wrong’ doesn’t result in the guaranteed right to being offended in the context of a joke, especially to the point where we tell them to stop. It’s too easy to throw around words like censorship, but we all know the connotations that comes with. So a better way to simplify it would be just to say let’s all chill out a bit and have some fun. There’s too much genuine harm going on in the world to be focused on judging those who make jokes targeting those who actually do find the humour in it.
