Eternals · Ethics · SuicideYou should always try to prevent someone from killing themselvesFor1 comment·Aug 14, 2022
I agree with "prevent" - I would not be so sure if the proposition were : You should always try to stop someone from killing themselves.
All actions that would prevent people from getting to the point where they want to kill themselves (whether this be suicide by desperation, self-sacrifice in military combat for the benefit of others, suicide bombers, euthanasia etc) are usually worth pursuing. But once someone has made a decision to do this, the issue becomes a lot more complex and would depend on circumstances.
Eternals · In the News · Politics · VotingVoting should be mandatoryAgainst1 comment·Aug 14, 2022
TL;DR: It should not be necessary to coerce people into voting
A functioning democracy needs the active and willing participation of all (or at least the vast majority of) citizens. We should build societies where people care about politics and want to vote. And if we have got to the point where participation is so low that we are considering mandatory voting, we should first consider what has gone wrong to get us here and fix that first.
Health · holistic · How to Live · WellnessEssential oils are a scam1 comment·Aug 14, 2022
That's my problem with many of the propositions on this site. If they were clearer such as :
- There are lots of scams involving essential oils
- Most claims made about essential oils are false
then it would be easier to pick a side. But as it is stated, not only is it impossible to decide whether I agree or disagree, I also do not know how to interpret the results collected so far.
Drugs · Eternals · How to Live · LegalisationWe should legalize all drugsMixed1 comment·Aug 14, 2022
TL;DR Agree, but with caveats (and an exception for... marijuana)
I only agree to the extent that drug use should be decriminalised - taking drugs should not be a criminal offense. Drug addiction (and all other addictions) should be treated as a health issue rather than a criminal matter. People should have safe and legal ways to obtain most drugs that can be consumed recreationally with relatively little risk to their health, but this must come with widely available, accessible and accurate information about drugs and their risks. And society should retain the right to consider certain substances too risky/harmful to be legally available.
The contraband/trafficking of drugs and aspects of its sale should remain illegal (for example, selling to minors) as is currently the case, even for legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco.
I have a special issue with Marijuana. In principle its use should also be decriminalised as well. However, in many Western societies there is a lot of inaccurate information about it, and this is being used in the arguments to decriminalised it and I fear that the immediate effect of decriminalising marijuana would be to vindicate these arguments and promote its (inappropriate) use.
Marijuana can be taken recreationally safely, and smoking it does provide relief for some medical conditions. But it is not the universal panacea it is claimed to be. And it can be addictive and otherwise harmful to ones health, particularly if consumed from a young age, consumed regularly or in large quantities. It is probably true that it is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, which are legal. The difference is that the dangers of alcohol and tobacco are widely understood and acknowledged. Not so with marijuana. I would also like marijuana to be decriminalised. I am just not sure whether most Western societies are ready for that yet.
Eternals · Love · MarriageArranged Marriages are just as successful as Love MarriagesCommentary1 comment·Aug 14, 2022
This statement needs to be made more precise otherwise the results are meaningless. I think this was supposed to mean "Aranged marriages are AT LEAST as successful as love marriages" but literally it states that they have the same level of success. This means that those who think arranged marriages are more successful are splitting their votes between "agree" and "disagree' depending on how they understood the statement.
