Education · Eternals · USACollege in the US should be freeFor1 comment·Sep 30, 2022
I live in a country where education is free for all students, and it works excellent.
Why?
- Who gets the oppertunity to develop intellectually is completely independent of their parents socio-economic status. This means we do not miss out on great resourceful people who would otherwise never afford education.
- Proffessors still get paid well - by society, happily.
- A society that wants an educated population who can make good, ethical, productive deciscisions should be willing to pay for said education.
- Competition still exists. Competency and passion based motives for competitnion. Economic insentives is not the only thing that drives people. Those who end up in academia as professors are people with a burning desire for their field in itself. They want to engage in the best litterature and science of the day, because they have a passion for it. They hold great respect for their institution and uphold proud standars out of love for their craft.
You shouldn't have to pay to know basic, important stuff about society and the world. And you certainly shouldn't pay to become a resource to your society. Economics based competition is not the best incentive to hight quality intellectual achievement.
Drugs · How to LivePsychedelics help you thinkAgainst1 comment·Sep 30, 2022
TLDR: Psychadelics is a probable trap of a shortcut to something one ought to achieve by deliberation, dedication and training and reap excellent rewards for
I have seen absolutely zero correlation between thinking creatively, therapeutically, ethically or originally and use of psychedelics. In fact, often the opposite. Obviously this is only my anecdotal observation.
To "think" implies to be able to solve problems, connect information, analyze critically, employ logic and sort your belief system. This is basically what you should learn to do through education and also therapy. To think is a skill that must be trained, and it takes a lot of education and training to discern good ideas from bad ideas and think efficiently and productively.
People who are attracted to psychedelics, in my anecdotal experience, are people who want to take a shortcut, maybe out of frustration, desperation or lack of personal integrity. Shortcuts rarely, if ever, produce the best results.
Three years ago I had C-PTSD that inhibited me from ever having trusting, intimate relationships and gave me social anxiety and depression. I also had no coherent value system, making me aimless and my social identity meaningless. C-PTSD engrains certain self-defeating thought patterns in your brain through repeated negative reinforcement (trauma) over time. As you become older, your brain plasticity reduces, and it becomes harder to change those old paths. Psychadelics elevate that plasticity and can enable people to create new patterns. So, many with C-PTSD take psychadelics in the hopes that it will just "fix" them. It rarely does. Why? Because the plasticity doesn't help if you don't know how/what to replace it with.
I have never in my entire life taken drugs, smoked or drank alcohol. Instead, I took full control of and responsibility for my uncomfortable condition at all times. I educated myself extensively. It was hard, deliberate and un-exciting work, but every single day for months, I did simple thought exercises and manually retrained my brain to enable me to think clearly and rationally about myself and the world. This in addition to years of daily learing about philosophy and psychology. You need to train your brain. Now I'm studying philosophy, don't remember the last time I felt depressed, and I'm in a loving, trusting relationship with my first ever girlfriend. It is entirely thanks to my deliberate, conscious, repetative training of my thoguths and associated emotions.
In order to think better, one could:
- Write (write thoughts down, make a case for something you believe, write about what you feel, write about anything)
- Familiarize oneself with logic. (What is a fallacy? What makes an argument valid or invalid? Why should I believe X statement? Is what I think consistent with other observations? What makes observations reliable?)
- Read/Listen to other peoples thoughts (prefferably people who are smarter than you. They can show you where your own thoughts are inadequate.)
- Solve problems (Practical and intellectual problems in the form of small assignments, tasks, reparations or projects, made by you or others.)
- Repeat daily for oneself your intention to think (mantras about critical thinking, corrections of toxic thought patters, something that opens up your mind to consider new perspectives etc. "I'm open to be convinced I am wrong" or "I am open" or "It is my duty to think")
This positively revolutionized my ability to think clearly and critically.
Meanwhile the people around me who do psychadelics are anxious, still have relational issues, have conventional (uncritical) attitudes to most issues, and generally don't seem to progress meaningfully intellectually or emotionally. You can't just sit back and "let the improvement happen" passively. In fact many of them seem to become nihilistic or very suggestable to magical thinking. Their bounderies break down, they become arrogant with "false knowledge" or irrespinsibly engage in hedonic consumerism to satiate a weakened identity due to a deconstruction of a coherent way of thinking, without the dedication to reconstruct a well-functioning new one. Thinking takes work.
Eternals · Human Condition · Human NatureHumanity is kind overallAgainst1 comment·Sep 30, 2022
TLDR: Humanity's inhumanity is limitless if you consider who humanity stands in relation to. Under strong social pressure we do unspeakable evil. Our desire to fit in might be our ultimate detriment, in fact
Humanity is fundamentally unkind (to say the least) to those we share the world with. To base the assesment on how humans treat the ones who are already socially conditioned to recognize as valuable, is as fallacious as saying "racist white people are kind because they treat other white people kindly!"
Yes, of cource we generally are kind to those we are taught have value, but what about all those others we are conditioned to see as worthless?
Despite our capacity to reason, be compassionate and moral, we are extremely weak to social pressures and personal enrichment. No other animal, being able to reason and empathize, have ever enslaved, raped, tortured and/or killed members of other groups, while rationalizing it as "natural", "normal" and "neccecary". But humans, despite being perfectly capable of seeing why those reasons are unjustified logically, continue to enslave, trap, exploit, torture, burn, cut, gass and kill billions of other sensitive individuals, by choice. Trillions of lives a year are violently taken for no justified reason.
And in addition, humanity is actively killing itself by killing all those defenceless animals. It's the main cause of climate destruction, global warming, lifestyle disease, pandemics and much more. The equation goes as follows:
Our willingness to disregard other groups emotions + our desire to exploit them for trivial pursuits + social pressure = a powerful coctail of ideological (self)destruction and evil.
The inhumanity of humanity is limitless. The condition we force animals to endure for our snacks and social comfort literally is limitless, and I'm never ceased to be amazed by the depravity and inconsideration we have inflicted, and continue to inflict, on "the other". Evil requires that one chooses to do harm while understanding it to be harm, and being able to avoid it. That is exactly what humanity does to those we share the world with.
And the main reason? Ideology and social pressure. There is massive social pressure to conform to unjust oppression. In the past of women and other races, today of animals.
EternalsMaking your bed in the morning is importantAgainst1 comment·Sep 30, 2022
TLDR: Making your bed is disgusting and unhealthy, according to science
When you make your bed, that is, completely cover your matress with your smoothed out bedsheets, you create a haven for bacteria, fungi and dust mites.
The trapped space of warm, probably slightly moist air where you just slept, is a haven for all kinds of health-damaging stuff. And if you make your bed in the morning, they have all day before you return to your bed again to germinate and grow and whatever nastyness takes place.
Leaving it in disarray enables the matress and underside of your bedsheets to "breathe" and dry out, ultimately making it hygenic, better smelling and less gross. https://www.lifehack.org/317021/scientists-tell-you-why-making-your-bed-disgusting-and-bad-for-your-health
It sure is a nice habit to "order" your spaces in the morning, I do that too, but I do that in the other rooms, like the kitchen, living room and bathroom, and it gets me active in the morning.
So, for this reason I think making our beds should be adviced against.
Animals · Biology · EternalsNothing separates humans from animalsCommentary1 comment·Sep 30, 2022
Well, humans ARE animals. So this is like saying "nothing separates women from humans". Obviously no, because they are a subtype of humans. But I guess what is meant here is humans vs non-human animals.
It depends if you mean normative "human" or descriptive biological "human."
In the latter, biological human, we are just one animal among many. We are fundamentally minds who experience: learn, desire, wonder, fear, love, get bored, have sensations we try to interpret, and our experiences matter to us. We are thus animated by motivations (emotion) to seek what we value, and avoid harm. This is what makes us a "someone", a sentient subject of a life, and it is also the only thing we can rationally value in itself.
Humans in the normative sense distinguishes itself. We can reason about our own values and behaviour. We can recognize what is rational, so that we can satisfy our interests, and we have moral agency. Meaning we can rationally engage with what is valuable outcomes for subjects.
In other words, in the ways humans distinguish themselves - moral agency - we get moral responsibility to be humane. Ultimately meaning a sentient(vegan) ethics is the greates expression of what makes a human distinct from any other animal. If you reject a sentient-based ethics, and reject animals claim to your rational moral consideration, you have essentially rejected what makes you a human as opposed to non-human animal. Ultimately rejecting yourself.
