**TL;DR - Any public place where babies are allowed ought to allow breastfeeding as it is not fair to deny a mother from nursing when her baby is hungry. Although some might see the breast as an erotic part of a woman’s body, there is nothing sexual about breastfeeding and, on an anatomical scale, breasts only exist for feeding purposes.** In the United Kingdom women have the right to breastfeed in any public place, yet there is much controversial debate about whether this should be allowed, and there are still many limitations that make women unable to breastfeed in public. For example, women are still not permitted to nurse in some locations, including the House of Commons chamber [1]. Breastfeeding is important as it optimally supports the health and well-being of mothers and infants and is the best source of nourishment which is available whenever the baby needs it. [2] It is the most sustainable way to fuel infants on the go, and I believe that because of its importance to the development of babies it should be allowed in public as and when necessary. There is some social disapproval of public breastfeeding which is attributed to the sexualisation of the breast. It is a body part that is also perceived as being sexually attractive and involved in sexual activity but that also provides milk and nurture to children. [2] However it is the individual’s problem if they find anything inherently sexual about a woman breastfeeding as there should not be any sexual undertones associated with it in breastfeeding. If we are looking only at the human anatomy of the breast, it exists solely to provide nourishment for babies, but in our present society, particularly Western cultures, they have been profoundly sexualized. The misogynistic bid to turn the necessary act of breastfeeding into a sexual act is depraved and lessens the importance of nursing for both babies and mothers. Breastfeeding is essential as a source of sustenance when an infant needs nourishment and it is for this reason that it should be allowed in all public spaces so mothers can feed their baby whenever and wherever they need to do so.
