There is a lot of debate around what exactly qualifies as a grilled cheese so as I define it: it is a sandwich consisting of two slices of bread that are toasted or grilled and have melted cheese in the middle. Don't get me wrong, I love cheese and I love bread, but the combination is not goo. The cheese is generally rubbery by the time you get around to eating it, and the bread has become soggy instead of toasted. Depending on the cheese you use, the taste is also bland. I'll suffer through a pepper jack sandwich but count me out for Kraft Singles.

The quality of a grilled cheese is entirely dependent on the quality of the ingredients. It's hard to disagree that a slice of American cheese in between two dry toasted pieces of basic white bread is far from an ideal culinary experience. However, if you take good quality bread—either homemade or purchased—and use unique cheese types and combinations, the resulting sandwich is far from your father's grilled cheese sandwich. Plus, toasting the bread in butter or olive oil ensures you don't have a dry sandwich once you tuck in. If you put in the work, a grilled cheese sandwich is greater than the sum of its parts.

While I normally don't enjoy normal, non-melted cheese I have to say grilled cheese sandwiches are good in the sense that they are good for you, and that they taste delicious! Intake of fermented dairy products like cheese has been linked with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, and cheese provides calcium which is good for your teeth and bones (1). Eating cheese as part of a daily diet has also been linked with a decreased cardiovascular and stroke risk, according to some studies (1). Cheese is also a great source of protein, so having a grilled cheese sandwich is a good source of both protein and calcium! This is so true! Grilled cheese sandwiches are not good for so many reasons. But the main reason I agree with this opinion is because I believe that a grilled cheese sandwich is not the same as a toasted cheese sandwich or toasties. Apparently, grilled cheese sandwiches, toasted cheese sandwiches or toasties are the same but different, in that these different cheese sandwiches have all been culturally influenced. Essentially though, they are the same. The main difference is that a grilled cheese sandwich is buttered on the outside and a toasted cheese sandwich/toastie is buttered on the inside. Also, if that is an accurate description of a grilled cheese sandwich then I don't want to taste one. I've grown up on toasted chees sandwiches and I love them! Maybe you can give those a try?
