Coming out of high school, is anyone really prepared for the ‘real’ world? Most kids are ready to get out of their parent’s house and into their college dorm or college town. But is that considered the real world? Generally, not. Students graduate college around the age of 21-22. But are these kids prepared to take on what life is going to throw at them? If you are not an accounting student, are they prepared to do their taxes? Or get their own insurance on the vehicle they just bought?

There are so many ‘adult’ duties that are thrown at people between the ages of 18-25. Who prepares us for this? Some people are fortunate enough to have their parents walk them through everything, but others are not as lucky.

How many kids are prepared to do their own laundry when they reach college? Or sew a hole in their favorite shirt? Many of these questions are rhetorical as there are more kids than you would think that don’t know how to do a lot of the things talked about, especially in my experience in the US. There are many other things that our educational system no longer teaches students, and this should be fixed. Children should be taught about taxes, insurance, laundry, and even how to fix their own clothes.

No, they should have more time to learn these things from their parents at home. School should be 3-4 hours a day, tops, and not mandatory past the age of 12.
