A pizza cutter, and by this I mean the little utensil that is a wheel with a handle that you roll over a pizza to cut it, is the best object to use to cut pizza.
I have seen people use knives and scissors to cut pizza, but these are not as smooth or as efficient to use in cutting pizza into slices. Also, pizza cutters are really fun to use because they feel like a pretend tool from a children’s kitchen set.
All in all, rolling pizza cutters are the superior utensils for cutting this cheesy dish.
Actually, I've had trouble cutting pizza using pizza cutters, mainly because the crust is sometimes too thick for the cutter to be rolling through the pizza smoothly and effortlessly. I have found (weirdly enough) that kitchen shears (like scissors) are the best way to cut a pizza.
I recently read an article in Kitchn that suggested using kitchen shears to cut a pizza, and I have tried it at home and it actually works. According to the article, this way is totally easy and clean, leaving all the ingredients in their place.
I usually am too hungry to use any kind of utensil to cut pizza (I use my bare hands most of the time), but kitchen shears have proven an unexpected but viable solution to cutting pizza on the first go.

TL;DR – The pizza cutter has become a rather iconic kitchen utensil where cutting pizza into proper slices is concerned. And while it’s been designed to efficiently do so, it’s definitely not the best kitchen utensil for this. In fact, there are different utensils for cutting pizza properly and they each have the same end result – a properly sliced pizza.
The website expressdigest.com confirms this to be true when it provides us with a very informative list containing some interesting utensils that can be used to slice pizza with. What’s more, it even provides us with a utensil that’s proven to be better than the pizza cutter.
The four most conventional utensils on the list are as follows: the meat cleaver is a multi-functional kitchen utensil and can be used for pizza-related activities that don’t just involve the cutting of pizza.
The next “utensil” – if it can be called such, is bladeless cutting. This is possibly the safest way of cutting your pizza as it doesn’t involve anything sharp. All you have to do is break the pizza while it’s still frozen. Another utensil to be found on this list is a pizza knife and usually comes with a curved blade to make cutting (back-and-forth motion) easier.
The last conventional utensil on this list is the chef’s knife. When using this utensil, one has to consider choosing the “correct” chef’s knife. That is to say, the knife has to be relative to the pie’s diameter, as this will ensure that the cutting is done in one smooth motion – with not too much cheese getting pulled off.
And the three most unconventional utensils on the list are as follows: the Hybrid Ulu which has a curved blade and is typically used for cutting vegetables, has demonstrated that it is just at skilled at slicing pizza. Next is the kitchen scissors which works best when cutting ultra-thin crust pizzas – as opposed to regular pizzas.
The last unconventional utensil and the winning one on this list is the kitchen shears. While it is underrated, it’s also considered to be one of the most valuable and versatile tools in the kitchen. Faster and more convenient than almost anything else, the website expressdigest.com confirms that kitchen shears are in fact, “The Best Tool for Cutting Pizza’ as they are able “to cut the perfect slices of pizza with ease – cuts cleanly and easily across the pie while keeping cheese and toppings in place..."
So while a pizza cutter is handy to have around, it’s certainly does not qualify as the best utensil for cutting pizza. That honor goes to the kitchen shears. Particularly, since the kitchen shears is considered to be the cleanest and easiest utensil of them all.
What Can I Use Instead of a Pizza Cutter?

TL;DR Through analysis of the faults of the two primary utensils: the pizza cutter and scissors, I conclude that the more uncommon serrated knife is the superior pizza cutting utensil.
Cutting a pizza does not only cause practical troubles but also social ones.
Despite its intended purpose, the pizza cutter utensil itself is often too blunt and therefore squashes the soft toppings into the hard crust causing a messy and deformed pizza. It doesn't cut but instead drags.
Whilst scissors are quick and efficient they can hardly be considered socially acceptable to use at a restaurant or dinner party as they are not usually deemed appropriate for things we ingest considering their primary use of cutting objects. Cleanliness and hygiene, therefore, becomes an issue.
Instead, one should use a serrated knife. Their toothlike edge are ideal for cutting through crusty breads as the teeth of the blade catch and then rip causing a smooth slide through the food. This utensil would be especially useful for calzone pizzas as the blade can cut through the crust without squeezing out the filling and disrupting the overall aesthetic.
TL;DR Pizza cutters are fast, flash and fun to use.
Pizza cutters are indeed the best utensil to cut pizza.
A caveat to this- a blunt, cheap pizza cutter is less effective than a kitchen knife.
Here's some purely anecdotal evidence: in my first ever job, I worked in a pizza place. I began at sixteen and was truly dreadful at anything other than customer service and working the deep fat fryer. Eventually the day came for me to step up and cut the pizza: I was unsurprisingly dreadful at this too. The cutter dragged the toppings; pulled the cheese away from the base, and generally made for a wonky looking pizza.
But you get better with practice- three years down the line, I was a machine. Speedy, straight and symmetrical pizzas every time. In fast food, speed is after all the name of the game- and there's nothing faster than a pizza cutter. Perhaps it's something to do with the angle of the wheel; the force of the cut, or the crunch of the crust. Perhaps it's practice. Perhaps... a bad workman blames his tools.
This is a good point that you make here in the last paragraph: often (depending on the situation and the implement), a person is only as good as his/her tool(s) - which in this case is the pizza cutter.
Loved reading about your experience. Thank you for sharing :-)
By the way, are pizza cutters not a bit difficult to maintain in terms of cleaning the blade and also sharpening it when needed?
TL;DR Scissors are by far the superior utensil for pizza cutting in terms of functionality.
Its very simple. Pizza cuts easily when using scissors, there’s no issue with tougher crust, and none of the toppings are affected in the process.
