There are several reasons why reading is the best hobbit you can have. It doesn't only help you to relax but increases your knowledge and intelligence. Many people disagree because they consider reading a boring hobby. Reading is a peaceful activity you can do whenever or wherever you want. It's something you can do in complete silence and expand your horizons. You can learn so much from a book, and sound more cultivated without learning something by obligation. Reading is my favourite hobby because it indulges my imagination and can read about any subject I want. Fantasy, romance, or thriller, millions of books allow you to time travel and cultivate your creativity.

The beauty of reading is the opportunity it gives for the reader to extract themselves from reality. Fantasy is cited as being a popular tool for escapism, but the physicality of the text itself offers immersion regardless of genre. The book (or e-reader) in your hand; the shape of letters and the rhythm of the words contribute to an enveloping quiet absorption. That being said, there are other routes to relaxation. For individuals who enjoy reading but have to expend more conscious effort to take in the words than others, the level of active engagement required may inhibit relaxation. This in itself may present a barrier for some to even begin to enjoy reading. Bound up in reading is memories of learning and education; for children whose way of learning did not align with the teaching, pressure to achieve and disappointment when they can't. These are things that can be overcome- although perhaps not in the moments you would like to be relaxing.

While I am a reader myself and do use every opportunity that I can get to do it, I actually have mixed feelings where this opinion is concerned. On the one hand I feel that I agree since I'll take reading over watching a movie any day - no matter how good the movie. I kid you not. While on the other hand, I know and understand that not everybody likes reading - especially in this context. And it's with this contrasting aspect in mind, that I actually find myself agreeing (at least in part) with your argument. Especially, where you mention some interesting reasons why people may not find reading relaxing. Very informative. Thank you!

Reading is definitely a good relaxing hobby. But what about playing video games, painting, or watching a movie? These can be just as relaxing. I love reading a good book but some days I just want to lay down and watch a movie. It doesn't make one hobby more relaxing than the other. Each hobby is best for different situations and people. Even though it is easy to read where ever you go it's just as easy to watch TV, a movie, or play video games due to new technology coming out every day.

Reading is a great form of relaxation - however, this does not include all books. Some books act as a great form of escapism and are amazing for mental health by relieving stress and depressive symptoms. An example of these type of books could include the Harry Potter series. On the other hand, I do not think all books can aid relaxation. When I was studying for my History degree, I had to read many intense, and often quite dark pieces of literature. Examples included books detailing events of the Holocaust or other horrific events throughout history. They certainly did not relax me and if anything, they made me feel more tense / overwhelmed. So, I think reading is only relaxing depending on the type of book that you are reading.

I have to disagree, at least on a personal basis. I love reading, and to some extent I do truly get lost in a good book. However I tend to find that if I'm anxious or stressed about something, the silence of reading can allow those thoughts to play in my mind. I studied English Literature at uni, and during bouts of anxiety, my work ethic noticeably suffered because I would put off reading, knowing that I would just be sat there stewing. I find for myself that I need more stimulation to relax. Maybe a movie or a video game, something that can just completely distract me from the present moment. That said, I do think that reading in bed should be the last thing you do before sleep, as it engages you if you're not ready for sleep, but doesn't require the use of a screen which obviously does not help to sleep.

I think listening to music while painting is the best hobby for relaxing because you are creating something while keeping your mind occupied!
