These statements (#MaC) form part of the Morality as Cooperation Quiz
What is morality? Where does it come from, and how does it work? And how and why do moral values vary, between individuals, and across cultures?
The theory of ‘morality as cooperation’ (MAC) argues that morality is best understood as a collection of biological and cultural solutions to the problems of cooperation recurrent in human social life. MAC draws on evolutionary game theory to argue that, because there are many types of cooperation, there will be many types of morality.
These include: family values, group loyalty, reciprocity, heroism, deference, fairness and property rights. Previous research suggests that these seven types of morality are evolutionarily-ancient, psychologically-distinct, and cross-culturally universal.
Take the Quiz to work out what your particular mix looks like.
I believe you are generally obligated to help those that help you. As doing to others as they do to you, is one of the cornerstones of civilised behaviour.
However there are times, when people will try and use the social etiquette, "if you give something, you should get something" to obligate someone so that they can get things they want out of you, while giving you things you don't want.
When this happens you are perfectly entitled to take what is forced on you while giving nothing in return.
So it is a good idea to seek some form of general agreement in a transaction, of giving and getting, before making an exchange.
You have no obligation, it would be the right thing to do yes but certain situations call for different reactions. If someone helped your family get out of a financial situation then that’s good but if that same person asks you to kill someone then that is hard to say you have an obligation to harm another human being. Should but not obligated to
I am not obligated to do anything I don't want to. If I am in the position to help someone I will but doesn't matter if someone has helped me. My family and my brother-in-law's family hit some hard times. when their kids needed Halloween costumes I made sure they had that Halloween. I shared my food, etc. One day I needed help with something that my brother-in-law and sister-in-law I thought would help with. I will never forget my sister-in-laws words. I have to be able to help myself first until I become able to help others. It was a lesson learned. I do not hesitate to help someone. I no longer think it means someone will help me.
Thanks for sharing your story here!
The principle of reciprocation is a fundamental aspect of human social interactions and ethics. Helping those who have helped you fosters mutual support and strengthens relationships, contributing to a cohesive and cooperative society.
For:
Moral Reciprocity: Many ethical frameworks and cultural norms emphasize the importance of reciprocating kindness and assistance. This principle is rooted in the idea of fairness and maintaining balance in relationships.
Social Cohesion: Reciprocity builds trust and cooperation within communities. When individuals support each other, it creates a network of mutual aid that can enhance the well-being of everyone involved.
Psychological Benefits: Helping others who have helped you can reinforce positive social bonds and create a sense of gratitude and fulfillment. It promotes a cycle of goodwill and positive interactions.
Against:
Conditional Relationships: Obligatory reciprocation can sometimes lead to relationships that are based more on obligation than genuine care and willingness to help. It might create expectations that detract from the spontaneity and sincerity of altruistic actions.
Individual Circumstances: There may be situations where an individual is unable to reciprocate due to personal limitations or hardships. Imposing an obligation can lead to feelings of guilt or inadequacy in such cases.
It make sense to me to do so. Also, as someone who want to make friend in life, this is a must. Finally, I would say that there is stuff like the etiquette and it's important for someone like me who want to join the upper class.
