While there are some awful zoo's out there, and that should still very much be acknowledged.
Zoos as a whole CAN (when done right) do so much good for everyone involved, the animal itself that lives in the zoo, the people who visit the zoo, and the population of that animal in the wild.
A good zoo should contribute to educating its visitors to each animal, why the animal is so important to the ecosystem, general important information about the animal, and ways people can help these animals thrive in nature. There are lots of people who know surprisingly little about wild animals, and zoos can be a great way to help spark passion in people to do more for wildlife conservation. Zoo's can also help educate people on what to do if they come across said wild animal out in nature, and to highlight the danger to both human and animal that attempting to interact, feed, or pet a wild animal causes.
Zoos that specialize in repopulation programs also are wonderful. Since they can help species rebound from endangerment preventing extinction, since they give the babies a MUCH better chance of survival than when in the wild.
Zoos are also great for when an animal is brought into a wildlife rehabilitation organization and, due to it's injuries, may be unable to be released back into the wild. Sending the animal to the zoo, prevents having to euthanize the animal, while also providing a way to educate people about the animal, and the things we as people can do to help prevent further cases like the one the animal is in.
Again this isn't to say there are no bad zoos, there are too many zoos which value profits over animal welfare, education, and the ecosystem. Being to a zoo where it's clear the visitor is valued over the animal is always a depressing and infuriating experience. Zoos not providing enough space, enrichment or a proper habitat only does harm to the animal and the people.
Zoos should be places of education, and as a hub to directly contribute to wildlife conservation and protection. They aren't always for that, but that doesn't mean all zoos should all be done away with. Just that we need more laws regulating zoos and the treatment of animals to help ensure the best quality of life for the animals, accurate and up to date information for visitors, and a total end goal of wildlife conservation and protection rather than profits.
Animals · Cats · Dogs · How to LiveDogs are better than catsAgainst1 comment·Jul 8, 2025
While I love dogs, I prefer cats.
Cats are cleaner than dogs, spending 30-50% of their day just grooming themselves. Unlike dogs that will happily stay gross and smelly if allowed to.
Cats smell better than dogs, due to how often cats groom themselves, they don't really have much of any smell to them. Dogs however have a natural smell that can't really be gotten rid of easily, or gotten rid of without risking the dog's skin health through over bathing.
Cats also tend to be much less intense when it comes to wanting affection, while dogs tend to get all jumpy, jumping on you, barking, running around and getting all up in your face. Cats frequently spend time with their person by simply wanting to spend time in the same room as, or nearby their person.
And when cats do become more demanding of attention, they aren't as loud or as in your face about it.
I just think cats are better. Still love dogs tho.
Eternals · Gender · Sexism · SocietyMen suffer from discrimination just as much as womenAgainst1 comment·Jul 8, 2025
While men still face struggles specific to their gender, it doesn't compare to the systemic and historic discrimination, hate, marginalization, dehumanization, and neglect of women's needs and basic human rights.
There are still plenty of places where women can't wear what they want in public, hold public office, be doctor's, have equal access to education, employment opportunities and even just a basic right to control their own bodies.
Women still are frequently blamed for being the victim of abuse, rape, discrimination, hate, and violence. Women are shamed for being the parent that stays, they're hated for their body's natural changes after childbirth. I still see so many men post online about how women's only value is their body, what they can provide in the bedroom.
There are still a terrifyingly high amount of men, and sadly women, who don't believe rape can happen between a married couple, that a marriage is a legal constant consent contract.
Women still have to fight tooth and nail to get sterilized all because some hypothetical man this woman might marry (not really though, because if she wants to be sterilized why would she marry a man who wants kids) might want kids. A man who isn't even in the picture, that she hasn't met, who she may never meet, has more control over her body than she does.
It wasn't until the late 1900's when women started to be included in medical trials. Women are still expected to get an IUD inserted without any sort of anesthetic, or sedation.
Discrimination against men leads to hurt feelings, discrimination against women leads to more dead women. Misandry hurts feelings, misogyny kills.
Activism · Cancel Culture · RacismSilence is ViolenceFor1 comment·Jul 8, 2025
"Silence is violence" is a phrase that essentially means "If you aren't part of the solution you're part of the problem." meaning that by being a silent bystander to an issue, you're helping the aggressor.
An example I saw that explained it perfectly was if you imagine someone pushing a cup of water off a table. You have 3 options, you can stop the person from pushing the cup off the table, stand by and watch as they push the cup off the table, or help them push the cup off the table. However there are only two endings, either the cup gets pushed off the table or it doesn't. Both standing by doing nothing to intervein, and actively helping push the cup off the table will result in the same thing, the cup being pushed off the table. It's only by actively stopping them from pushing the cup off the table that will result in preventing the cup from being pushed off the table and spilling everywhere.
In this analogy, staying silent during times of injustice is the standing by and simply watching as the cup is pushed off the table. It's only by standing up and advocating for what's right that you're helping those in need. Just not actively contributing to the injustice isn't the same as actively fighting against said injustice.
