1 in 3 women has been sexually assaulted at some point in their life. If gender discrimination is a thing of the past, then this statistic would be much lower than 33%. What's even more disgusting is that most of these women experience sexual assault within the ages 11-17. Then, dress codes are imposed in order to decrease their sexualization... rather than teaching men to stop oversexualizing young girls.

this is a lie people tell themselves so they don't have to confront the reality of gender based discrimination.

• according to this guardian article 63% of women believe that there continue to be major obstacles for women to get ahead, only 41% of men feel similarly. according to pew research centre.

• the stat i mentioned prior is proof that misogyny is so ingrained in society that men feel they can decide whether or not women's oppression is an ongoing issue, neglecting to realise they benefit from not having to think about it.

• as sjones1 mentions, the oversexualisation of women from a young age is prevalent. their sexual assaults are often ignored and dismissed, often leading to them being blamed for how they dress as though that could ever be an excuse.

• furthermore, people ignore intersectionality and how different women will have experiences that doubly hard since they have other marginalised identities which intertwine and oppress them in complex and overlapping ways. for example, being trans and/or a woman of colour impacts the experience of misogyny faced by these women who are still overlooked, a testament to how misogyny is alive.

• everything from double standards and harassment in the streets to literal murders, in the name of honour or at the hands of an abuser, is proof that existing as a woman in this world comes with its own set of dangers.

• men often dismiss women by centering themselves in the conservation, without acknowledging how patriarchy affects them and how the plights they experience are rooted in misogyny. gender discrimination exists in ways we may even be unable to see and derailing from this conversation does not make that less true.

With women still earning less then men for the same job role, gender discrimination will never be a thing of the past.

• It is not a thing of the past. Modern society is filled with gender discrimination, such as the pay gap.
• Women get paid less, often for the same role. In 2020 the median UK gender pay gap was 15.9%. That means that men, on average, earn 15.9% more than women.
• In high earning roles, the pay gap is much more noticeable. This shows that gender discrimination is still rife. In addition to this, only 60% of employers actually report their wages in respect to gender. This raises the questions of what the gender pay gap is like in the unreported organisations, is could be so discriminative that they do not want to publish their data.

Today’s gender discrimination is nothing like it was 20 years ago, yet there are still fields, predominately male dominated roles, where it’s prevalent.

Without a doubt, gender discrimination still exists, but to what degree, and where, varies. The progression towards equality between men and women has been significant, yet incomplete. This is partly due to the drastic shift of ideals among generations. In a 2017 study consisting of entirely male participants, 70% stated they had no preference to if their boss was male or female. That same group was then asked if their father’s would feel the same, resulting in a resounding no. So while the current generation supports gender equality, traces of discrimination seep through from older age groups.

But gender discrimination is much like any other bias, it's relative to circumstance, and response. And it isn’t an issue that females face alone, men experience inequality as well. For example, military forces have slowly become more gender proportional, yet it's still a male dominated, and encouraged, field.

We’ve come a long way from the 1920 ratification of the 19th amendment, and these achievements have paved the way for changes to continue. One of the main areas subject to gender discrimination is the work place. However, a recent study found that 87% of North American companies reported gender diversity as a top priority.

While it’s not perfect, it is getting there, but a few reasons why gender inequality still exists include :

→ Lack of awareness from male counterparts. Men typically exhibit majority-favoring behaviors unconsciously.
→ Decisions based on previous experiences. Gender stereotyping is when particular characteristics are generalized, then attributed to someone due to their gender, often followed by being treated in a demeaning or degrading manner.
→ Fear of backlash. Some women fear they may face repercussions from peer level colleagues if they provide feedback, or speak up in certain scenarios.
→ Gendered social norms. On a global scale, cultural context often plays a tremendous part in setting gender norms and expectations.

It's evident that change takes time, but the progress that's been made has rendered gender discrimination, for the most part, obsolete.

Interesting how all the comments so far assume that if there is gender discrimination it takes the form of men discriminating against women. There will always be discrimination between genders and this is no bad thing.
When the Titanic sank what was the instruction given? Women and children first. Men were discriminated against in that instance and rightly so. There will always be occasions when discrimination is not just normal but right.

I have read through all these responses and have noticed much of it was about the binary genders. While I do agree there is much gender discrimination towards the binary genders, especially women, I am going to be talking about my personal experience being non-binary.
I go to an all girls school which is where I have come to terms with my gender identity and have found the lack of awareness of non-binary people’s existence. Many people use his/hers or calls everyone by ladies and gentlemen during my co-ed classes. This mixed with the lack of gender neutral bathrooms and other simple gender neutral necessities that are gendered in society has made my social life hard. Many people don’t even recognize my existence and assume that I am mentally ill or looking for attention. In the United States, I cannot have my gender on my legal documents in some states, and I don’t want to because I fear I’ll be pulled over in Texas or some other more conservative state and be hate crimes. While the media has increased awareness on non-binary people, I still do not receive the same basic things as other people in the gender binary do.
