Censorship · Morality · PCQCensorship of films and magazines is necessary to uphold moral standardsAgainst1 comment·Apr 17, 2022
While I believe that some things should be censored from children, adults who should know that films and magazines are for entertainment should be allowed to see many different things from different points of view. While these things should be rated as such, there is always different stories and topics that people should experience no matter how morally wrong they may seem. Just because something is wrong does not mean it does not happen and as long as the viewer knows that it is wrong then there is no problem. There are many morally wrong things that people face in their lives, and seeing a character go through it in movies can help them identify with the movie more and may make them feel seen.
Censorship also brings into question what is morally wrong. Everyone has different opinions on what is wrong. While I may believe one thing is wrong, another person may see this as normal or even good.
Culture Wars · PronounsMost things should be communicated with gender neutral terms to guarantee inclusivity and clarity1 comment·Nov 28, 2021
While I agree that using gender neutral language, especially in languages that have little to no gender neutral language, it can make things more complex and some people will be upset. In my opinion, it is still important to use gender neutral language though. Many people feel unseen and unrecognized when they are not included in what is considered the norm. While using gender neutral language may not immediately create less sexism and transphobia, as it becomes more normalized and taught to our kids, it will create a more accepting and inclusive future.
Eternals · Gender · Relationship · SexismThere's nothing 'natural' about the traditional 1950s gender stereotypes1 comment·Oct 30, 2021
Gender roles have been reinforced by those in social power, being men. This forced many women to act in certain ways throughout history to protect themselves and fit in with society. Also, there are many different cultures around with world with vastly different social norms for the sexes. What we see as the norm for the sexes today and throughout history is very European and white-washed due to colonization and the way history is taught nowadays. While it is natural if someone does it into the gender stereotypes, it is not natural that they were so widespread and that they were expected and forced onto people.
Discrimination · Eternals · Gender · SexismGender discrimination is mostly a thing of the pastAgainst1 comment·Oct 27, 2021
I have read through all these responses and have noticed much of it was about the binary genders. While I do agree there is much gender discrimination towards the binary genders, especially women, I am going to be talking about my personal experience being non-binary.
I go to an all girls school which is where I have come to terms with my gender identity and have found the lack of awareness of non-binary people’s existence. Many people use his/hers or calls everyone by ladies and gentlemen during my co-ed classes. This mixed with the lack of gender neutral bathrooms and other simple gender neutral necessities that are gendered in society has made my social life hard. Many people don’t even recognize my existence and assume that I am mentally ill or looking for attention. In the United States, I cannot have my gender on my legal documents in some states, and I don’t want to because I fear I’ll be pulled over in Texas or some other more conservative state and be hate crimes. While the media has increased awareness on non-binary people, I still do not receive the same basic things as other people in the gender binary do.
Fashion · How to LiveEveryone expresses themselves through the clothes they choose to wearMixed1 comment·Oct 27, 2021
While many people do express themselves through the clothes they wear, many people cannot afford the clothes that truly express themselves. So, I agree people can use clothes to express themselves, but there are exceptions so it is important to not judge people or expect something of their personality based on their clothes.
Education · Equality · Eternals · How to Live · School UniformsSchool Uniforms should be mandatoryAgainst1 comment·Oct 26, 2021
As a non-binary student at an all girls Catholic school, I have found the uniform to be very sexist and transphobic. The fact that the all boys school across the street has a dress code while my school has a uniform further reinforces sexist ideals. Many people try to show their personal style through shoes, socks, and hair, but those things go against the uniform as well. This doesn’t only affect people’s ability to show who they are through clothes at school, but also at home. With having many of my days spent in uniform at school, I do not want to pay the extra money for clothes that fit my style because I will likely not have much time to wear them.
Eternals · GenderWomen are better listeners than menMixed1 comment·Sep 12, 2021
I feel like nowadays it seems like this is true. This is because of the way we socialize men and women differently in the world. Women are taught to be good listeners from a young age while listening is a “less” important trait for men to have so they aren’t taught it as often.
Adoption · Children · How to LiveYou should adopt rather than procreateMixed1 comment·Sep 12, 2021
I plan to adopt because there are children who need loving homes and families, but I am not going to say that anyone should adopt over procreate. It is up to whatever the adult or adults want.
