Men should be allowed to express themselves freely, in whatever way that makes them feel the most comfortable.
- Men shouldn't have to do anything. There should be no "Men shouldn't cry", "Men should cry". Men should be allowed to feel free and express themselves in any means necessary.
- Men have the highest UK suicide rates. They are 75% of the total suicides. This is partly due to society putting toxic expectations on them. However by saying"Men should cry", we are still putting that expectation on them. We are still pressuring them and expecting them to act a certain way.
- What we should be saying is "It is okay to express yourself freely, whatever way to you feel most comfortable".

Family and friends should be able to support someone's decision for suicide if all over peaceful and life-prolonging methods of help have been tried and have failed.
- It may not be a law, but I thing assisted suicide should be considered for certain cases.
- A board or something similar should be ab le to grant assisted suicide if it is needed and wanted. It is unfair and somewhat cruel to keep someone in a painful and shattered life. For instance if they have a chronic disease or suffer with serious injuries or if they are mentally struggling.
- If all help has been given, if all peaceful and medical routes have been explored, it seems better that family and friends can be supportive and present for a loved ones death. This is rather than the shock and horrifying moment that may occur to loved ones if a person commits suicide alone.

Being in a good mood can make even the worst situations seem good.
- The world could be falling apart around you, but you could still be happy. The world filters in through your head. How you interpret situations, people and relationships all depends on your head. If you're in a bad mood, or a bad head space, a good situation in your life can seem bad. However if you're in a good headspace, even the worst situations can seem good.
- We have more effect on our own lives than we realise. Our own positivities and negatives can effect our lives drastically. Happiness is 100% tied to these moods.

Problem of induction - we can never really know for sure!!
- If I can remember this correctly (it's been a long summer) we can never truly prove anything. Not really anyway. There is the problem of induction - science is based off induction which cannot be justified. So science cannot be justified in return. However this is a whole other point.
- We may state that metals conduct heat, but how do we know? Because all the metals that we have found conduct heat. However there could be metals we haven't found. My point is, how do we know that we have found all the metals?
- Very simply, we don't. We don't know. So, we can never be 100% sure of anything.

Humans always lean to violence to solve problems.
- Too often violence and war seems like the easy way out of a problem. Annoyed with your mate? Punch them. Annoyed with a country? Drop a bomb. This seems to be humanities solution to any problem.
- A quick and easy solve, with consequences considered later. we have been solving problems like this since we began, from ancient dynasties and to modern wars. We rely on violence to solve our problems.
- As long as we are human, war will be our affair.

Self love is all you need to live happily.
- I look at this opinion with self love in mind. Not necessarily a love of another person, or a love for something, such as an idea or a materialistic object even. If you are to succeed in anything, whether that is in a relationship, in your job, in your life, you need to love yourself. With self love comes so many other things, such as confidence and determination.
- Everything that you may need stems from self love, and the mindset that it gifts you.
- So, love is all you need. Self love brings everything else you may need.

If property is theft, who are you stealing it from?
- Theft implies that the property has been stolen from someone, or something. But, for this to apply someone or something has to own that property in the first place. Whether this opinion is implicating that things need to be owned by a collective, or shared out, I am unsure. But, my point is WHO is the property being stolen from? If you cannot answer that, then surely property is not theft.

- The mediterranean diet has been named the healthiest diet three yearsin a row. It focuses on fruit, vegetables and whole grains (so the good stuff). This makes this diet incredibly healthy and easy to follow. It doesn’t include your classic junk food or any refined sugars, meaning that it’s excellent for people suffering with diabetes and other health problems. It is notoriously good for you, and has been proven by multiple surveys and diet investigations.

If vaping is banned than smoking will have to be banned too.
- If smoking is not banned, then neither should be vaping. I am no particular fan of vaping, however I see no reason for smoking to be legal and vaping not to be. After all, it is virtually the same thing. Often, vaping even smells better than smoking and more pleasant to look at, (due to the lack of ash being left).
- Vaping is still not good for you, and I am certainly not advertising it. But, my point is vaping can only be banned if smoking is banned. It is not as harmful as smoking, more pleasant, and probably cheaper.
Basketball · GOATLeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all timeAgainst1 comment·Aug 22, 2021
When looking at the NBA point statistics LeBron James is third greatest of all time.
- When looking at the NBA statistics, LeBron James has scored 35367 points overall. However, this is not the highest number of points. He is topped by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone, each scoring 38387 and 36928 respectively. Obviously these are lower than the LeBron James’ overall points.
- So when looking at the statistics of points in the NBA league, LeBron James is not the best. Of course there may be other ways to define greatest, however I have purely looked at the statistics.
Entertainment · Films · GOATThe Choice in "Sophie's Choice" is the greatest moment in cinemaAgainst1 comment·Aug 22, 2021
The "greatest moment" in cinematic history should focus on something highlighting the good of mankind, and encourage hope and kindness. Not focus on a painful choice.
- In “Sophie’s Choice”, Sophie, a mother of two, has to choose between her children. She has to choose one to survive, and one to die.
- This is perhaps the greatest choice in cinema, but not the greatest moment. There are other moments in cinema, showcasing bravery and kindness that are more important than Sophie’s choice.
- Often, as humans we focus on the painful and the bad. Instead, the greatest moment in cinema should be something uplifting. It should showcase the best of humanity and give hope, not draw on the bad.

I would prefer to have social equality over the truth. Social equality will positively impact more peoples lives.
- When I look at my life, and think about what I want, I would want social equality over truth. If I had to choose, having equal opportunities or knowing the honest truth, I would pick having equal opportunities.
- To me, having equality and being treated the same as others is more important than knowing the truth. In my life, the former will have a greater impact on me. -- The truth is important but can be ignored. If ignored, it will not effect a person too much. However if we ignore social equality, and let inequality strengthen, this will effect everyone. So, we should not prioritise truth.
Economics · Minimum Wage · Workers RightsThe market should set the minimum wageFor1 comment·Aug 15, 2021
When prices go up we should be able to afford them, so minimum wage needs to follow the trend of the market.
- The market is closely related to inflation. When inflation goes up, the market recognises this sending everyday prices either up or down. Your bread prices, your fuel prices, everything that you pay for is controlled and related to the market.
- So, the minimum pay should be too. When the prices go up, so should the minimum wage. When the minimum wage comes down, this will be because the market has caused the prices to come down. Nobody should not be able to afford to live because inflation has caused prices to increase. The minimum wage should adapt to this and make sure that everyone keeps well fed.
- I am certainly no economist but this seems like a logical and intuitive way to make sure that everyone can still afford to live.

Manipulation and exploitation are not forms of magical powers.
- Rasputin did not have magical powers. Mainly because manipulation and psychological abuse are not magical powers.

- He was smart, arguably evil, and unfortunately not magic.
Biology · Philosophy · Politics Humans are inherently goodFor1 comment·Aug 15, 2021
I want us to be inherently good. Inheriting evil would be devastating, and inheriting a "blank slate" seems far too normal and simple to be anything human.
- Although humanity has it’s flaws, and plenty of them, we are also good. Nobody is born evil. Or at least, I hope nobody is born evil.
- Supposedly around 83% of the world’s population consider themselves good. It is more likely that this 'goodness' has been born into us, then drilled into us while growing up. You can have evil parents and still be good.
- I think I mainly argue this point because I want us to be inherently good, the idea of us being inherently bad is very unnerving.
Communication · Social MediaSocial Media has improved human communicationAgainst1 comment·Aug 15, 2021
Social media takes away the personal connection needed to communicate.
-
I recognise that social media has allowed for people to communicate overseas and over continents and has been especially useful during a pandemic. However, this doesn’t make up for the fact that children are growing up with hearing and speaking disabilities because they’re so use to communicating online.
-
Surprisingly, only 37% of the world population has social media. So, 63% of the world doesn't have social media, and they are still communicating well!
-
Personally, I really struggle with talking to people online. I much prefer talking to people in person. I feel the reliance society feels on social media is something that will inevitably turn against us when we must talk to one another again. We are losing the ability to speak to each other, and the ability to form conversations in person rather than through a screen.

It would hopefully promote equality and allow everyone the same opportunities.
- It is a radical and probably effective move to create equality. It feels far-fetched, and somewhat unattainable, but a world without borders would hopefully mean more equality in resources and law.
- I recognise that even within a country with borders, such as the UK, there is huge disparity in resources. Some areas are rich, some are poorer. I struggle to see how we will escape this and completely level the playing field. But the internal differences within borders are far less radical than the differences between borders.
- Take the UK and the UAE for instance and compare their women’s rights. If there were no borders between the two, then there would be equal laws. The world would hopefully be moving towards a better place.
Economics · Land · Property · Social JusticeNobody should be able to own landFor1 comment·Aug 15, 2021
To protect livelihoods we need a legal contract of ownerships.
-
If no body owns land, how do we stop others from stealing it? The only thing that really stops people from coming in and stealing your land is the legal contract that says it is yours.
-
If you don’t have that legal contract, there is nothing to stop anyone from coming in and taking what is yours. I recognise that owning land is mostly unfair as its owned by rich aristocratic families. But, individuals still need to own land in order to slowly change the statistics of ownership across the world.
-
Half of the UK is owned by 1% of the population. This is because of estates and cooperation’s control the rest of England. It is important that individuals get to own land, to stop the large owners from controlling all the land. The only way to stop this, is for it to be legal to own land.

- Every person has such different tastes. Some of my friends hate the films that I love, and vice-versa. I have never come across a film that everyone who has seen it has loved.

(But if there was, it wouldn’t be citizen Kane!)
Childcare · Children · Parenting · SocietyChildcare should be freeAgainst1 comment·Aug 3, 2021
A person should be in a financial stable position and able to pay for childcare before considering having a child.
- It is a persons own choice, usually, to have a child. So, a person has time to consider their situation when thinking about having a child. A parent should take into consideration if they are in a financial position appropriate for a child. We all know that kids are expensive.
- Very simply, if a person cannot financially support having a child, they shouldn’t really have one.
- However I do recognise that childcare is expensive, usually amounting to just over £6000 a year. So, for lower paid jobs it would be difficult to afford childcare. So it should not be free, but cheaper.

- They have found all of the bodies of Nicholas II and his family, that includes Anastasia. There is DNA evidence to show that the remains found are in fact Anastasia, and the were located with the rest of the Romanov family.
- Anastasia may have survived the initial onslaught onto the family, but she did not survive for long. The position that the Romanov family had been put in, being murdered in the cellar of the house, seems impossible for anyone to have survived. This, and the fact they found her body, shows that she did not survive.
Climate Change · Pollution · Society · WealthPrivate Jets should be bannedFor1 comment·Aug 3, 2021
The luxury of a private jet does not warrant the damage it does to our world.
- I have nothing against people spending their money how they want. However, the aviation industry accounts for 3.5% of the worlds global warming. It seems to me that having private jets on top of normal air travel is an unnecessary expense to the environment.
- The people who use private jets could just a normal plane, but choose not too. So, instead of the CO2 coming from just one plane, it comes from two. This seems unnecessary. As it becomes more obvious of the impact of global warming, people should be thinking about their own CO2 footprint. This could, and should result in private jets being banned or at least used less.

- Atheists, who do not believe in any God, are fine. They have not got a God, and are in the same position really as the people who do believe in God.
- My point is, man does not need God because, when someone doesn’t have God, they are completely fine.

We would not have been able to move the stones into those positions, aliens would have been able to.
- Stonehenge is around 5000 years old. It dates back to around 3000-2000 BC. When we think about society at those times, we don’t know too much. It was before Rome, and certainly before cranes and electricity.
- So, how would they have created stonehenge? The stones were not originally there, and they were certainly not originally in that position. The people of that time, did not have the materials or the logistics to move the stones into those positions.
- Instead, perhaps Stonehenge was not there by human intervention, as humans nearly couldn’t have created it. Perhaps, it is there by a supernatural or extra-terrestrial intervention. They would be able to move the stones into those positions.
Colonialism · Culture Wars · Statues DebateRhodes must fallFor1 comment·Jul 30, 2021
We should not celebrate a historical figure for their actions, when those actions would not be celebrated in present day.
- We cannot praise people from the past who we would not praise now. If people have done something wrong, whether is slave trading, colonisation, stealing from others (arguably the last two are the same) they do not deserve to be celebrated.
- A statue implicates celebration. It suggests that that person has done something great, something worthwhile, something good. If that person hasn’t done those things, then they do not deserve a statue in a public place.
- Arguably, ripping down statues in protests is not necessarily the right way. Instead they should just be taken down, and placed in a museum.
Economics · Eternals · Political SpectrumControlling inflation is more important than controlling unemploymentFor1 comment·Jul 30, 2021
`Inflation and unemployment are inversely related. Control one, you control the other. But, inflation might be easier to control.
- Inflation and unemployment are related. When unemployment is low, inflation is high. When unemployment is high, inflation is low. This means that if you control one, you basically control the other.
- So, controlling one may not be more important, as they’re related. However, I do feel that controlling inflation might be easier than controlling unemployment.
- This is because economists and governments and bankers (I’m unsure who actually controls inflation) cannot force people to go out and get jobs. People have to do this at their own free will. People can be bribed, but the economy may create 100 thousand jobs, only for fifty thousand of them to be filled up. Forcing inflation to do what you want seems like it would be easier.
- Also, inflation effects more people. Changing the unemployment levels will only really effect the unemployed.
Afterlife · Eternals · God · ReligionThere is an AfterlifeFor1 comment·Jul 28, 2021
Time seems infinite, and infinity minus a human life is a long time to not exist.
- Time seems endless. We can not say when time began, nor can we say when, if ever, it will end. If there is no afterlife, then we are alive for an average of 73 years, out of a total of infinite years.
- There is so much about the world that we do not understand, the idea that time did not begin and cannot end seems unfathomable. So who am I to say that the afterlife cannot exist either? A infinite number of years seems like a long time to not exist. For all we know, we could begin and end with time. The thing is, we will never know.
- My point is, time is infinite, we do not know what the world is capable of. So, there very well might be an afterlife.

Our bodies may be complex by they cannot explain certain elements of our personalities.
- Each person is more than just a mortal body. We are more than just a pair of legs and a torso and a head. We have traits, and a personality.
- These traits are such things as, kindness, humour, and memories that have shaped our lives and whom we are today. So, my point here is that we are more than just a body. These traits are not effected by our bodies, they are not “tethered” to our bodies. Instead, these traits define who you are as a person.
- As these traits are not tethered to your body, but yet still exist, we must have souls.

Prayers occur frequently, miracles do not.
- 93% of the world is religious. This means that people pray to their religious beliefs frequently, if not daily. That is a lot of prayers, and probably not a lot of consequences of the problems being prayed about.
- As an atheist myself, I am in no position to say what people pray about. Although, I am going to assume that when asking for miracles, prayers are not rewarded. Miracles hardly ever happen, and if they do, it can usually be explained by science or coincidence.
- Prayers and miracles do not add up, praying does not result in results. Results are made by choices and actions in our everyday lives.

- The average student is in £45,000 worth of debt when they finish their degree. This is a huge amount of money.
- At least half of employed people do not use their degree for their job. There is no point having a huge amount of debt over your head for a degree that you will never actually use.
- It appears instead you will be paying £45,000 for a piece of paper with your name on it. You will rarely leave university with something you will actually find useful in employment.

We will never be able to discover what is beyond the universe, if there is anything at all.
- If the universe was to stop, what would be after it? Consider a pond. A pond stops at it edges, but then it goes to ground. It is the same with continents. When a continent stops, it changes to sea. SO, what would the universe go to if it was to stop?
- The simplest and best way to answer this is to just say that it doesn’t stop. We have only explored 4% of the universe and it takes 46.5 billion years to reach the edge of our observable universe. We would never really be able to get to the edge of the universe, if it did indeed exist, as it is way past our observable universe limit.
- So, yes the universe is infinite. There really cannot be anything beyond it. And if there is, I doubt we will ever discover it.

- The only point I have against this, is that heels hurt. If you go out in them, you might regret it when you are barefoot on a sticky nightclub floor surrounded by broken glass. Also, it has been proved that they cause [musculoskeletal injuries] (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4735171/). But, it is your choice whether you want to risk these, this is the point of feminism

Culture · History · Human NatureHistory repeats ItselfMixed1 comment·Jul 25, 2021
History contains some mistakes that are easily learnt from, these will not repeat, More complex mistakes will repeat themselves, as we seem to refuse to attempt to learn from them.
- To prove this statement, all we really need to look at are WW1 and WW2. WW1 killed over 20 million people, we did not learn from it, and perhaps we did not do everything that we could to prevent it happening again. Hence, it repeated itself, and we got WW2.
- If we look at history, we see the same story. We see a person becoming too ambitious, taking too much power, and then eventually they, or their successors comes to a horrific end. If history did not repeat itself then we would not be able to have ambition, for fear of recreating that exact story.
- However, I feel we have learnt from some history, and some history will not repeat itself because of this. Consider the Titanic, it killed [1500 people] (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Titanic). We have learnt from this, always watch out for icebergs. And, hopefully this will never happen again as technology has improved.
- Some aspects of history will not repeat themselves, but I feel like these are aspects with easy and simple lessons. However, other more significant things, such as to be careful of ambition and how much power is too much are harder things to learn it seems. Thus, history will continue to repeat itself.

Men are the cause of some of society's problems, but they are unfairly blamed for some issues that they have no control over.

Between 2019 and 2020, [545 thousand] (https://www.statista.com/statistics/377412/arrests-england-and-wales-time-series-by-gender/) men were prosecuted for crimes. Only [94 thousand] (https://www.statista.com/statistics/377412/arrests-england-and-wales-time-series-by-gender/) women were prosecuted.
- Men, as a general term, have been the cause of a lot of society’s problems over the years. Such as serious gender discrimination, exploitation of people and materials, and abuse of people and systems.
- However men alone cannot be blamed for all of these problems. Women will have played their role in it at some point. I am unsure where or how, but to say that all of society problems are due to men seems unfair. Women will have their share of fault too, it just may not be as much as men.
- It is important to remember that there are women out there who support gender discrimination and other problems of society.
- Men are rightly blamed for some of society's problems. But, this does seem to stem from mens actions in the past. It seems unfair to always blame men for issues caused by certain male individuals hundreds of years ago.

We are yet to see the full extent of what AI can do, so we cannot limit it. AI could one day run the world.
- Very simply, it already has. Robots will take over 20 million factory jobs by 2030. So, from car manufacturing, to packing food to mowing grass, machines have taken over our jobs.
- Yes, I realise that there is a difference between machine and AI. We programme the machine, we are the intellect behind it. AI is it’s own intelligence. We are yet to create an articulate and ingenious AI, but we have created millions of machines and robots.
- So, no doubt AI is just a few steps behind. Before we know it AI will be programming those machines. AI will be designing the algorithms and making decision. Of course there is the question of compassion, is it possible for machines to have compassion? We cannot say they can’t, as we are yet to create a clever enough AI.
- Humans are too ambitious, and in general would prefer an easy work life to a hard one. And, letting AI run your company while you relax in the profit seems like a way many would consider.
- We should be wary of AI, we are yet to discover what it can do.

Ghosts who look like a white phantom figure and say BOO most likely don't exist, but as paranormal sightings go up we should be careful about saying that there are no such thing as ghosts or paranormal activity.
- In 2020 a UK poll claimed that [three in five] (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwj9k_jHjPzxAhVGa8AKHSE6AgEQFjAHegQIDRAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fuk%2Fhome-news%2Fghost-halloween-supernatural-experience-majority-people-survey-groupon-a8581156.html&usg=AOvVaw0Ej1RkfHQdMSuCTQ_ftmlA) people had witnessed paranormal activity. Of course this statistic varies, some articles claim that only 34% of people believe in ghosts, and 9% actually communicate with them. I think when witnessing paranormal activity becomes as frequent as it is here, there must be some truth to it.
- This doesn't mean that they are communicating with their dead relatives or getting haunted by a ghost, but a certain 'presence' may have been witnessed. I feel that the image of ghosts that we imagine has adapted to our modern society. We expect ghosts to be white wash figures who jump out of a cupboard and say boo. This seems unlikely.
- However, there could be some supernatural presence that is created after death. This after-all has been speculated for thousands of years. This does not necessarily need to be a ghost, but some sort of presence or being that allows your consciousness to carry on living after your mortal body dies.
- I would like to believe in ghosts, mainly because it suggests that life is not as finite as it may seem.

With women still earning less then men for the same job role, gender discrimination will never be a thing of the past.
- It is not a thing of the past. Modern society is filled with gender discrimination, such as the pay gap.
- Women get paid less, often for the same role. In 2020 the median UK gender pay gap was 15.9%. That means that men, on average, earn 15.9% more than women.
- In high earning roles, the pay gap is much more noticeable. This shows that gender discrimination is still rife. In addition to this, only 60% of employers actually report their wages in respect to gender. This raises the questions of what the gender pay gap is like in the unreported organisations, is could be so discriminative that they do not want to publish their data.

Pluto does not meet the criteria set out by the International Astronomical Union to be classed as a planet.
- The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has three criteria for planet classification. These are:
It is in orbit around the Sun.
It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium.
It has “cleared the neighbourhood” around its orbit. - Pluto does not meet the third point. It has not “cleared its area” of other objects. This has something to do with its gravitational dominance, or lack of, due to its size.
- Pluto does not meet the criteria needed to be a planet, hence it cannot be classed as a planet, only a dwarf planet.

The exact story seems unlikely but we cannot be sure that no ancient city has ever fallen into the sea due to a natural disaster.
- The myth of Atlantis is , of course, a myth. The idea of the people of Atlantis becoming too greedy and consequently being punished by the Gods seems, unfortunately, very unlikely. This is due to many contributing factors, such as the scepticism around God and the supernatural as a whole.
- However, I also believe that there is a bit of truth in most myths. So it could be possible that a city somewhere fell into the sea, and that observers unable to explain why, blamed the Gods (a very common occurrence in ancient history it seems). Of course this could instead be due to a tsunami or earthquake.
- I WANT to believe in Atlantis, because it makes our world that little bit more interesting.

- We should be looking at the dangers of nuclear plants, how they increase chances of cancer, how they increase chances of having to relocate, and how they can cause deaths.
- In 2011 a tsunami caused three nuclear plants in Fukushima to release radio activity, which has now caused cancer rates to rise.
The advantages of nuclear power are not worth the dangers and health risks that come with it.
MFT · MFTQ · Morality · SocietyCompassion for those who are suffering is the most important virtueAgainst1 comment·Jul 17, 2021
People cannot get through a tough time if they are dependent on others compassion.
- Compassion is important, but I’ve looked at this with the view of the person who is receiving the compassion instead if those giving it.
Personal strength is more important. You need your own strength to get through times of suffering. - Compassion when people are suffering is all well and good, until the person suffering becomes dependent on that compassion. People cannot get through a tough time if they are dependent on others help and cannot help themselves due to it.
- Of course compassion for others is important, but there are plenty of other virtues such as selflessness and forgiveness that are equally important. Instead, the most important virtue is that you yourself have the strength to get yourself through suffering. We should never be dependent on others.

We will never be able to identify everything in the universe, so there will always be unidentifiable objects.
- In 2020 there was 7’000 sightings of foreign objects. This is increasing every year as our scientific equipment including radar imagery gets better.
- As we become more aware of UFOs we register more of them. They are unidentified objects, meaning that we don't need to know what they are, just that they exist. I'm not trying to promote extra terrestrial activity here, that green aliens are going to pop down to earth and say hi, just that there are things out there that we are unaware of.
- The universe is expanding, 7.3 kilometres a second to be exact, and is already huge. There is much of the universe that we will have not seen, and perhaps never will, so there will always be things that we cannot recognise.
Eternals · Luck · Social MobilitySuccess is mostly determined by social factorsFor1 comment·Jul 11, 2021
Society shapes a person. Hence, society is somewhat responsible for that persons success.
- There are many factors that help sculpture a person. These include social factors, such as where you were brought up, who you were brought up by, and what type of education you had. As all of these factors contribute to creating a person, these factors are also somewhat responsible for a persons success.
- When giving an appreciation speech, people never thank just themselves for their success. They thank their friends and their family and their managers, aka society and its factors.
- So, it is impossible for someones life to not be determined in any way by an exterior factor. For instance what school they went to or which city they lived in. These things always impact our lives. Due to this, success in life is determined by society in someway.
- If someone was never effected by society, I personally doubt they would ever actually reach success.
Eternals · Human Condition · Human NatureHumanity is kind overallMixed1 comment·Jul 11, 2021
We all strive to be kind, but ambition often leaves kindness trampled to the ground in its wake.
- When people are shown a video of someone falling down some stairs, they laugh. At some point in your life, you will most probably have laughed at someone falling or slipping over. Humanities most common emotion is not kindness, and it never will be.
- Humanity seems to be ambitious more than anything else. This is the one trait that is highlighted continuously throughout history. People always strive for the best and to improve themselves. We compete with others, to do this, you sometimes have to shove others to the side. You cannot be ambitious and be kind.
- We all strive to be kind. However, it is not easy to always be kind. Instead, it is easier to fall back on selfishness and rudeness. Humanity can be lazy, and due to this, we are not kind overall.
Food and drink · How to Live · TasteSalt and Vinegar crisps are the best (UK)Mixed1 comment·Jul 11, 2021
Extremely tasty but possibly painful.
- They’re tasty. Salt and vinegar crisps are tangy and full of flavour.
- Ready salted crisps are too plain, BBQ can sometimes be too beefy, cheese and onion is the only other flavour that can really challenge salt and vinegar. Other spin off flavours are often just not up to the same standard as salt and vinegar. Due to the other flavours just not meeting the mark, salt and vinegar excels.
- If you have a cut in your mouth, and you eat the crisps, it is super painful. It feels like your mouth is on fire. Obviously you could just not eat the crisps, but this is still a negative point.
Politics · Protest · SocietyRioting Can Be JustifiedMixed1 comment·Jul 11, 2021
Rioting can be successful in achieving change, however people can often be harmed in the process.
- If you live in a terrible society, for instance a society where you have no rights, you will want change. Sometimes, change may only happen if you rebel against the system. Rebelling could include rioting. It could be the only way to make people pay attention and for change to occur.
- Rioting is often harmful. People’s livelihoods get ruined and people can get hurt. A lot of damage is usually done to areas. This negatively effects a lot of people.
- Rioting can be justified, but the cause of it needs to be just. The consequences and harm that will occur if you don’t riot need to be greater than the consequences if you do.
- There may be more peaceful ways of achieving peace.
Eternals · Machiavelli · Philosophy · Political Philosophy · Politics It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be bothAgainst1 comment·Jul 11, 2021
You are safer and more likely to stay in a position of power if you are loved.
- To be feared, usually means that someone will revolt against you. If people fear you, eventually there will be an uprising of people who refuse to fear you any more. This uprising, as shown by history, will result in your fall. Power is easy to lose when you are feared.
- To be loved, people are willing to make sacrifices for you, or fight for your name, and want you to stay in power. The power of the mob is huge, and if you have that power behind you, you are powerful.
- Being loved is safer, less people will want to oust you.
- Everyone loves to be loved. The feeling you get when you know someone dislikes you can be unpleasant, I personally would never choose that for myself.
- It is could be easy to go from being loved to being feared. It would be difficult to go from being feared to being loved. So, if someone finds that being loved doesn’t work, then they can turn to being feared instead!
Eternals · Ethics · How to Live · Morality · PhilosophyLying isn't really wrongAgainst1 comment·Jul 11, 2021
Lying may seem to solve some problems when your intentions are good, but usually the future consequences outweigh the immediate consequences of this decision. (Karma).
- Small white lies seem like a quick solve some problems. However, in the future these lies often come back to bite us. For example, your dad will make that hideous meal that you told him was delicious again. You will then have to eat that meal again. If you had simply told him it was hideous, you would not be having to eat it again.
- Lying never usually works out in your favour. There seems to be a real life karma with lying. You always get found out. So really, lying is never worth it, because the long term consequences are usually bad.
- Lying is morally questionable. It is seen as unethical. Every religion or lifestyle coach will tell you to live your life with honesty. This is because it is alway portrayed as the right thing to do, which it usually is.
- Lying may not be always wrong, as sometimes a white lie may not always come back to bite you, but lying is usually not worth the future trouble.
Morality as CooperationEveryone's rights are equally importantFor1 comment·Jul 4, 2021
Everyone is equal. Everyone is important. Everyone is entitled to rights. Everyone's rights are equally important.
-
How can anyone really disagree with this opinion? Can anybody actually argue that somebody’s rights are not important as some else’s?
-
We are all human, we have all evolved from the same original species. Thus, we are all the same. We are all equally important, equally unique and equally special. As all of our lives are equal, then so are our rights.
-
Everyone is entitled to the same rights. These rights remain important, no matter who you are.
-
However, I was questioning whether you could perhaps disagree with this. For instance, is a disabled persons right to healthcare more important than a non-healthcare needing persons right? The latter person does not need the health care or support services like the disabled person does. Thus, does that make the disabled persons right to healthcare more important as they need it more? I am unsure on this.
-
But, if we start agreeing that one persons right to healthcare is more important than another due to their position, then we will continue to discriminate in some way. It may not first appear negative discrimination, but really any discrimination is negative.
-
We are all equally important. No life is less important than another. No life is more important than another. Life should be a level playing field, instead of a steep slope that denies too many people of basic rights.
-
Everyone’s rights are equally important. I only wish that the entire world agreed with this opinion too.
Entertainment · In the News · Reality TVLove Island should be bannedMixed1 comment·Jul 4, 2021
Love island should be banned if we are unable to change the impact it has on its audience and how the audience responds to it.
-
Tragedies. Three members of the love island cast have committed suicide. Caroline Flack. Mike Thalassitis. Sophie Gradon. These devastating deaths cannot be fully linked to love island. However it cannot be a coincidence that three people who have all been members of love island have tragically taken their lives. These deaths cannot be ignored. We need to learn from these, and make sure that incidents like these never happen again.
-
However, these deaths may not be a direct result of the show itself. But, they definitely showcase the brutality of social media. Caroline, Mike and Sophie were all at the mercy of the harsh words of social media after reaching fame. It seems undeniable that the trolling of Caroline, Mike and Sophie eventually resulted in their deaths.
-
Unrealistic beauty standards. Love island promotes an unrealistic body and beauty standard. The cast are all beautiful and physically fit. This can have a devastatingly negative impact on young people. This is because often they’re easily influenced by social trends and standards. This could lead to terrible consequences.
-
Fame and entertainment value. Love island can have good impacts. Some members of the cast have done very well from their love island fame. For instance, Dr Alex has been able to work on mental health awareness and with multiple charities. This has been successful due to his huge social media presence.
-
Love island has a huge fan base, and has millions of viewers. These people obviously enjoy watching the show, and the entertainment value is high. However, this entertainment value can no doubt be found in other reality shows instead.
-
Love. Love island has resulted in a few marriages and children. These are obviously good outcomes of love island, as it has resulted in happiness for those involved.
-
We cannot deny that Love island has negative impacts. It has indirectly caused multiple suicides, introduced unrealistic beauty standards, and increased the amount of online hate and trolling.
-
Instead of banning love island, we should instead reflect on our own responses to it. We need to adjust as a society so that love island does not have such a negative impact on peoples lives. However, if we are unable to adjust our response to love island, then yes, it should be banned.
Eternals · Free Will · PhilosophyThere is no such thing as Free WillAgainst1 comment·Jun 23, 2021
Although at times free will can seem unlikely and unattainable, we need it. Consider a world where we have no free will. Every decision has been determined by some “other force”. As we have not made our decisions, we cannot be morally responsible for them. Therefore, criminals cannot be punished, and heroes cannot be praised.
What type of society would it be, where mass murderers are not punished, and doctors cannot be praised? For example, if a doctor saves a life, they cannot be praised. This is because the decision to save that person was not made by them. Therefore, everyone would ignore their life-saving work. This is wrong as doctors, and others like them, should be praised for their work.
Free will makes actions meaningful. Without free will, our actions would not mean anything. This is because it appears that nobody makes a decision because they want to, or even because they don’t want to. They do not make the decision at all.
Furthermore, if we do not have free will, then something must force our decision. However, we have no evidence of this, or a reasonable idea as to what it could be. Could it be a God like character? Or are our lives a result of a chain reaction of consequences started from the beginning of time? Both of these suggestions make life seem less personal as we do not control it.
Another force determining our decision would mean that our lives, every decision we supposedly make, is already decided. To me this makes life seem less unique and less special.
However, reasons against free will cannot be ignored. Determinism suggests that everything has a cause, and it is grounded in science. Even random actions can be determined by looking at previous events and laws of nature. This does suggest that free will cannot exist. However, even if free will does not exist we still need to believe in it. Belief in free will will continue to give our actions and choices meaning.
Although there are valid arguments as to why there is no free will, we need it. Or, we at least need to believe we have free will. This is because if we believe we have free will, then our actions continue to be meaningful and we continue to have moral responsibility for them.
